Powervault 112T drive compatibility

I have a Powervault 112T with one DDS4 drive in it.  I am running out of capacity on the tape plus I am going to add another server that will be backed up with this drive.  What higher capacity drives are compatible with the 112T?  I'd like to install a new higher capacity drive to keep our backups to one tape (for simplicity reasons).  Thanks.

Hiya's...

SDLT library will do the trick- but it can read only the DDS4 tape... no write.

Will the SDLT fit in the 1U Powervault 112T rack enclosure?  It appears from the picture that it is too big to fit in the 112T.  I'd like to use the open slot in my 112T for a new drive with a higher capacity than the DDS4.

Hiya's.....

Uhm... I would probably go ahead and upgrade to a bigger unit such as the 132T running sdlt drives. It's a 4U unit since you are growing in capacity.

Mhhh... U may need to check Dell site if ya can install it in the 112T, not sure on that one.

Those drives will work they just are not DDS compatable. I was under the impression you wanted to stick with DDS format. If you are willing to switch tape technologies then yes I highly recommend getting off that technology (DDS) and upgrade to DLT. Your capacity will increase greatly.

So the DDS4 or DAT72 are the only drives that will work in the 112T?  Will the VS80 or VS160 drive fit in the 112T?

Thanks,

If you are wanting to stick with the 1U form factor and continue to use the DDS format your only Dell option is to upgrade to the DAT72 (36/72) drive. This drive will fit into the 112T.

If you want a cheaper ($ not quality) solution you could add another DDS4 unit to the 112T and cascade your jobs from one drive into another. You would simply load each drive w/ a tape and kick off the job, when one tape gets full it will automatically span the job onto the second drive/tape.

I think there has been some confusion as to Type IV media (Linear technology) and DDS4 media (Helical technology) in this thread.

Good Luck to you.

Another option besides DLT/SDLT is going with LTO. LTO-3 offers 300GB native (600GB). This is quite a bit more than the 160/320 that SDLT currently offers. You may not need the space now, but it does make you more future proof (future growth of your backup requirements).

Dell does not offer a 1U LTO solution yet.
