PowerVault 705n "SMART warning" errors

Greetings everyone,

I came in this morning to find my PowerVault 705n spewing forth error log alerts, these being the messages I have received today:

====================================================================

05/08/2003 12:49:03 ERROR Disk Driver : Device 0x10004 SMART warning.

====================================================================

The previous message occurred in the following context within the system log:

05/08/2003 12:49:03 ERROR Disk Driver : Device 0x10004 SMART warning.

05/08/2003 10:49:01 ERROR Disk Driver : Device 0x10004 SMART warning.

05/08/2003 8:49:00 ERROR Disk Driver : Device 0x10004 SMART warning.

05/08/2003 7:58:54 INFORMATION System Database : SDB has been written to flash at 2003/05/08 7:58:54.

05/08/2003 2:48:55 ERROR Disk Driver : Device 0x10004 SMART warning.

05/08/2003 0:48:54 ERROR Disk Driver : Device 0x10004 SMART warning.

05/07/2003 22:48:53 ERROR Disk Driver : Device 0x10004 SMART warning.

====================================================================

Anyway, so I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what these errors mean.  I've done support searches and forum searches all up and down Dell's website and newsgroups with no luck.  Emailed techincal support early this morning, but have not yet received a response.

Excellent.  Thank you for your advice.  You're a credit to the forums.  :)

The SMART warning means that one of the server's hard drives is in the process of failing.

SMART stands for Self Monitoring Analysis And Reporting Tool, and is built into the hard drive. The drive monitors the performance of various components of the hard drive and reports when it falls outside certain parameters set by the manufacturer. The 705N is able to read these warning and report them in the log. Consider this an early warning and backup your data, then have the drive that's failing replaced.

So, my own advice comes back to haunt me. Much like Jesse, I started to get these same messages, except they were for logical device Ox10006, which resides on disk 1.

I followed my advice and backed everything up. Then I waited for the drive to fail. The warnings appeared over three days (10 warnings total) and then stopped. It's been two weeks since I saw the last one. No drive failure has yet occurred.

So I'm wondering, in my case, should I consider this a false error message and just go on with my life? Or should I dread the imminent demise of one of the drives?

Well, in my situation, this specific server played a rather important role in day-to-day business for our branch since it housed all of our user profiles, documents, settings, etc.  So, for me, there was no possiblity of considering it to be a false error message since we couldn't afford to assume anything.

Anyway, I ended up calling Dell Tech Support and it was immediately concluded that the drive was failing; the support guy didn't even mess around: he just took care of it right away, and in our situation, the whole unit had to be replaced because apparently the problem went farther than just the drive.  My suggestion would be to call tech support as soon as possible, but it ultimately depends on much time you have to burn on the phone with them regarding how critical this machine is for your operation.

In two paragraphs I sure didn't say much, but maybe the perspective will help... at least I hope so.  Good luck!
