Update: As you can see, the disk group is a RAID10. So one drive failure should not lead to data loss.

Should I try a "revive diskgroup" ?

Hello Simon_Onea,

Can I get you to pull a support bundle so that we can review it to see what is going on?  I will send you a private message so that you can send me the log.  the revive disk group maybe needed but it is best to look at your support bundle first to ensure that will not cause any harm to your data.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Update2:

We crossed fingers and issued "revive diskgroup" from the command line and it helped! The disk group and virtual disk went online and became accessible to hosts.

Thanks for the reply Samuel!

I have sent you the support bundle in a private message.

We took the risk and issued the "revive diskgroup" and it helped!

We still don't know what caused the volume to go offline.

Hello Simion,

Thanks for the logs as it helps to look into your issue.  After looking at the logs you are running 8 year old firmware on your MD3200.  With running firmware this old there are a lot of issues that come up that have been addressed in newer firmware.  Your issue with the disk group and virtual disk going offline is one that was resolved in newer version of firmware.  Since your firmware is so old you will need to upgrade it in two steps.

You will first need to go to firmware version 07.75.28.60.  Once you get to that version and all is stable then you can upgrade to 08.20.24.60.  Here are the links to the firmware as well as the instructions for doing a firmware upgrade.

Firmware Upgrade instructions

If your current firmware is not 7.75.28.60 A06 8/3/11 – you MUST step to 7.75.28.60 before going to 07.80.62.60. This firmware is included with the 07.80.62.60 download.

  1. Gather support bundle in MDSM
  2. WARNING: If you have a single controller PowerVault MD3200/MD3600 series storage array you must stop all I/O operations before starting the firmware upgrade.
  3. Extract the firmware to folders and remember location.
  4. Burn or mount the ISO for the resource cd.
  5. Uninstall the MDSM from hosts (reboot)
  6. Install MDSM from resource DVD (reboot)
  7. Save, then clear the Event Log.
  8. Update to 07.75.28.60 if not already there, then update to latest firmware.
  9. Verify connection and data.
  10. Update the hard drive firmware.
  11. Reboot stack and verify all is optimal.
  12. Power off server, then MD32xxi, then any attached MD12xx units
  13. Power on any attached MD12xx units
  14. Wait at least two minutes then power on the MD32xxi
  15. Wait at least 3 minutes then power on the server

Please allow for at least 60-85 minutes for the updates.  Time may vary depending on how long each reboot takes.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello Samuel!

Thanks a lot for the updates and the instructions. Indeed the software of the storage was not updated since it was put in production.

We will try to perform the upgrade as soon as possible.

Is it true that we must solve the hardware issues first before attempting the software upgrade? (replacing the controller cache battery and replacing the failed drive)

Have a good day!

Best regards,

Simon.

Hello Simon,

It is best to have the system healthy prior to do the firmware upgrade.  I have seen some cases where the system was not healthy and when the customer did the firmware upgrade it caused loss of data, & other issues as well.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.
