PowerVault MD3200i and Compellent SC220 SAS connection failure
Greetings everyone!
I need a help to define what may be wrong with the expansion module connection.
I have 2 devices - PowerVault MD3200i (f/w ver. 08.20.24.60, single module) and recently purchased used Compellent SC220 (f/w unknown, dual module). Module #1 of SC220 is connected to SAS OUT port of MD3200i and is not recognized correctly.
View Enclosure Components shows "Not available" for part num, serial num, vendor and date of manufacture like on the screeshot below:
View Enclosure Components
Additional menus:
- Monitor > Reports > Cable connections: "No external connection to view".
- Hardware > Enclosure > View/Edit > Physical Disk Channels: this menu doesn't open.
What I tried:
- Re-install MDSM, install it on a clear system.
- Swap SC220's controllers positions, connect SAS to each of them separately, with single-installed and dual-installed
- Connect SC220 with MD3200i switched-on and off, reset MD3200i controller before and after the connection
All the same with no result.
Also I tried to connect SC220 to another system equiped with RAID controller with external miniSAS interface. The enclosure is recognized correctly during the startup and all installed disks are available in the OS (TrueNAS appliance in my case).
Please help me to define:
- Are PowerVault and Compellent products are compatible on the first place?
- If yes, then what might be wrong with the SAS connection I made.
Thank you in advance!

Hello all!,
As @Origin3k correctly pointed out. If you want to expand a MD3200i you have to consider either the MD1200 and/or the MD1220 as JBODs connected to the expansion ports on the MD3200i.
You can check the Technical Guide Book for the DELL PowerVault MD3200i/MD3220i Series of Storage Arrays (section Storage Capacity Expansion - Page 18).
Regards.

You should consider to buy a MD1200 or MD1220 which are the right JBODs for the MD3.
