PV 745N Error: "Software Installation aborted!"
Hello:
I need a little help please.
I a PowerVault 745n Server, with a factory hardware RAID setup. Recently, both arrays 1 & 2 failed. O/S hosed, and Data on on array 2 can not be accessed. I have found backups for most all needed data, however, I cannot access the raid's data. I plan to just reinstall the system.
I received an error: "software reinstallation aborted!"
Running boot installation, screen shows:

Leading to error:

The command completed successfully.

Dell PV745N USB Key Reinstallation Preporation vs 1.0.0.5
On XP System:
There is a Shared folder on only drive, drive 'C', as "NASShare".
(C:\NASShare\PV745N.PQI) it is ping able (on our single network.)
Files inside are the image files (PV745N.PQI)
I then figured maybe too much traffic to connect maybe (all else I can think of, I moved the PC to next to the server, made a direct
connected with a switch, and the "itfxr-xp" system.
If there is a newer Dell Reinstallation Console version, I have not been able to find.
Maybe I need to change the 'SETENV.BAT' file? However this is as far as I got.
Please help.
Thank you!

I found a few steps for you to try and see if that allows you to gain access to the missing data. We no longer have the reinstall media available for this system on our website.
Boot to the Recovery Drive
1. Shut down the NAS system.
2. Remove the front bezel from the NAS system.
3. Swap hard drives 0 and 2 with each other.
4. Swap hard drives 1 and 3 with each other.
5. Replace the bezel.
6. Turn on the NAS system.
The NAS system boots from the operating system on hard drives 0 and 1.
NOTE:
Because the system boots using the recovery image operating system with the Dell default settings, any configuration information is lost.
7. Log in to the NAS Manager. Back up your data and then reinstall the operating system.

Hello Kenny:
Thank you for your reply, and maybe I am missing something.
I performed the switching of the drives as per above, However, I am still not able to boot to an O/S (No boot device available, press F1 to retry, F2 to go into setup), as before, and using the Boot USB Key (one created from the Dell USB Key Reinstallation Preparation SW) only gives me three options: Reinstall NAS System, Run Diagnostics, Boot to DOS.
Some additional info:
Previous, there where two arrays, both show as Failed. Both Array #00 OS, and Array #01, Data 1.
In Array Utility, array 1(OS) shows drive members 0, 1, 2, 3, with 0,2 grayed out, other drives 1,3 highlighted.
In Array Utility, array 2 (Data 1) shows drive members 0, 1, 2, 3, with 2,3 grayed out, other drives 0,1 highlighted.
I do however have the four Reinstall disks that came with the system, as indicated originally.
Question, Can you boot to a utility, or disk to allow backup of Data? I figured it's pretty much hosed at this point.
I look forward to any additional help, and what would be the next best step.
Thank you!

You could try a linux live utility like knoppix. Create a bootable usb drive or use a usb dvd drive.

Hello Tommo666,
Some great idea's here in this community, yours as well.
As things stand, I think I will just want to reinstall the Factory Win Server 2003 NAS image at this point.
However, I'm still stuck at same place as first posted in this thread.
I've made several key images with the proprietary recent Dell SW.
I have the standalone Win-XP Pro PC ready, with all four disks loaded in system, the appropriate NASShare, the SW's created NAS User, and ready to reply to the USB Keys call to load image, but the USB Key on the NAS Server cannot see share to connect, yet the XP box 'sees' the connection. The way the SW is written (unknown at this point) it wrote the Key to connect. I even set up on a dedicated single network just for the two machines.
I have noticed the following article "Errors Occur When Running the NAS Reinstallation Console" for it to fail, but I followed the workaround for that as well, instructions state:
"Exit the NAS Reinstallation console before shutting down the system,. Manually delete the user
NASUser, the group NASGroup and all the contents of, including the folder NAStemp before
running the NAS Reinstallation console again."
Perhaps, maybe there is a later version of the reinstall SW. I don't know.
Can anyone verify, and inform me where there may, or if there is a later version for the "Dell Reinstallation Console vs 1.0.0.1", for this PV745n NAS Server?
I have also tried two versions of the "Dell PV745N USB Key Reinstallation Preparation SW, versions 1.0.0.1 & 1.0.0.5.
Thanks!

...I am thinking, because of the error, is there another password used to unlock the image to install from the standalone client XP-Pro PC? The USB key uses Username of: 'NASUser' with a Password of 'powervault'.

...Also: The version of Resource and Reinstall CD's are 3.4.9.2 (5 in all).

You should use the usb key utility from your rebuild cd's. Newer versions of the usb utility are not backwards compatible with your build version of cd's. Dell made changes to each release and the scripts are different so fail.
