Reboot problems

For a little while now I've not been able to reboot my Powervault 725N properly. The reason for this is because after the windows shutdown screen has gone I get a cursor blinking in the top left hand corner. It hangs here and I have to turn the power off to get it to restart.

I've got the same problem on other servers which lead me to believe it's a windows update problem (although I could be wrong). Has anyone else had this problem and if so have you managed to fix it?

Any help would be most appreciated!

Many thanks

Warren

Hi,

I have the same problem, but I have no idea to solve it.

I think this problem cames after the Bios update to A08.

Hi!

I've had this same problem since quite a while. I think the problem arose after going from BIOS A03. This problem is very annoying and I am at the moment waiting for an answer from Dells support on this matter.

Yes we get this too. I was fine for a few weeks then after patching and updating we now cannot reboot properly. I'm really not happy about it as we cannot automate windows updates.

I have the same problem with rebooting the PowerVault  725 N.

Is there a fix or can I downgrade the BIOS?

Apparently  it got started with a BIOS upgrade.

Please advise

I'll add in my version of the problem, in the hopes that it helps out the Dell technicians.

The same reboot problem on my PowerVault 725N started after I installed tape drivers (or Dantz Retrospect, which also installs tape drivers). It was fine after installing the SCSI card & the external tape drive, but after I installed Retrospect and the tape drivers, the reboot problem appeared.

So it doesn't seem to be BIOS or Windows Update related, as far as I can tell.

Anyone that have solved this problem?

I talked with the Dell support and they asked me to try:

1: Connect a keyboard and mouse directly to the server (not via a KVM switch)
2: Uninstall KB828750, KB828035, KB825119, KB826232, KB823182, KB824141

I tried the first one but not the second one... doesn’t feel like a solution to uninstall security patches.

(Dell PowerVault 725n /BIOS Version: A08)

We've had the same problem with our PV755N for as long as I can remember.  Ours is currently at BIOS A09 and all service packs and updates have been applied except for this month's Microsoft patches (January 2005).

I'm in agreement with Mattias that removing security updates isn't the best diagnostic step, unless we know for certain that a particular one causes the issue.

I checked Microsoft's knowledge base and it isn't terribly helpful for this particular instance, where there is a black screen with blinking cursor but for all intents and purposes the OS has shut down.

If someone manages to resolve this issue, I'd love to hear about it!

When I first brought the 725 online it had this problem. It was related to having the OFO agent for BUE installed (9.x). If this fits your scenario a patch is available from Veritas.

Similarly, for my system, the problem was being caused by the Open File Feature for EMC Dantz Retrospect 6.0+. Removing this feature solved the reboot problem. I don't believe Dantz has a patch for versions 6.0 or 6.5.
