What about just installing MDSM on your desktop and monitoring from there across the network (to the management ports of the MD3000i)?

I'll try that, though I'll have to use a VM as my desktop isn't running a supported OS.
Thanks for the suggestion.
One odd wrinkle is that the text does appear if I connect via an SSH proxy from an external network.

MDSM is available for Linux and Windows (both come on the resource cd). If you're running OS X you'll indeed need a VM running Linux or so.
