TL2000 (SAS LTO-4) and Backup Exec 12.5

I just purchased a TL2000.  I have it installed on a server and both tape drive and changer appear to be recognized and in operational condition.  From within Backup Exec 12.5 sp 2, I'm trying to load a tape from the tape magazine and for the life of me can not figure out how to get teh transport to load the tape into the drive.

I've also tried via the web interface and the console, but don't see any option to load a tape.  I'm sure I'm missing something very simple (It can't be difficult).  I've always used stand alone tape units on a server by server basis.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

From the library web interface you can load the tape. Go to Manage Library and select Move Media, choose your source slot and your destination drive then hit Move.

On a side note... not sure why you want to manually move a tape into the drive. The s/w will automatically move the media from a slot into the drive to perform any operations you want on the media. For instance if you wanted to erase a piece of media simply right click on the media in the devices pane slots view and select quick erase, this will start an erase job.. the changer will grab that piece of media move it into the drive perform the erase and then move it back into the originating slot. Backup jobs will be the same, just setup your job and the s/w will handle all the media moves.

This is important to understand because when you manually move media within the library you run the risk of the library inventory not matching the s/w database inventory... the s/w only knows what it has done not what has been done to the library manually. If you move a tape from a slot to the drive and leave it there the s/w may not update the element status on its next job so from a s/w perspective the tape is in the slot but in reality the tape is in the drive, this will cause errors (and headaches)

Hope this helps

Thanks,

Not having worked with libraries and tape changers before I'm learning a lot. Like I need barcode stickers on the tapes for the unit to be able to register the tapes.  As silly as that sounds, I didn't know that.  Like I said, I'm from a one tape per server, rotate them to the fire proof safe kind of person.  Learning.  ....

OK, so I put my media labels on my LTO-4 cartridges and loaded them into the TL 2000.  I confirmed that the loader and the tape unit are registered and being seen within computer management.  I open BE 12.5 and select Configure Robotic Library Drives.  Under TL 2000 is shows .  I do not have the ability to assign the IBM ULT3580 to the TL 2000 unit.  This may, or may not be a problem.  I then see a Robotic library in my devices section in BE.  If I select inventory - which I suspect would tell me what is loaded in the unit, the Job Monitor returns a Job Status of "Ready, No idle devices are avaialble".  If I scan from within Devices, the scan doesn't show my media as being loaded.  It just shows .   Under Media Label, with no other information.  So I'm either doing something wrong here of there is something wrong with my unit.

Is ther esome sure fire set of tests I can run to make sure everything is working on the unit before getting BE involved?  Any help is appreciated.

Instead of selecting Configure Robotic Library.... from the Device Configuration Wizard choose Install Tape device drivers then simply hit all the "next" and Continue boxes until the driver is installed. Once the driver for the drive is installed stop the Backup Exec Services then start the services (Tools/Backup Exec Services). This should automatically assign the drive to the changer.... If restarting the services doesn't marry the drive to the changer you may need to reboot the server. When the library is properly registered in BE there will be a library Dell1 with a drive (IBM1) and a Slots.
