Virtual Disk Not On Preferred Path - MD3000 configuration - Array not Optimal

Question

We have a MD 3000 attached to a Dell Poweredge 2900 running Win2K3 server. The server box itself has two LSI SAS 5/E adapters in it. The setup is in a single host with redundant data paths setup. Array shows optimal prior to creating virtual disks. I proccceed as follows to set it up: 1. I manually create 3 virtual disks of 3 disks RAID 5 each (File System). I assign them LUN 0-2 and map them to the host. 2. when I go to device Manager (before or after using add_host and SMdevices), I see the 3 VDs as Unknown and Not Initialized at the same time MD shows array not optimal and I get the following alert on MD interface: Storage array: MD3000Preferred owner: RAID Controller Module in slot 0Current owner: RAID Controller Module in slot 1Affected disk group: 1 Virtual Disk: 1Affected disk group: 3 Virtual Disk: 3 3. Looks like all the three virtual disks are assigned to the same controller (controller 1). For some reason, looks like controller 0 is not being used.

Are all your cables properly connected? If you disconnect controller 1, are you still able to see the LUNs?

Also, you could check the "DisableLunRebalance" registry key located at: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\md3dsm\Parameters. This should be set to 0.

Hi Mohan,

Thanks a lot. I'm working on it remotely, I will check cabling tomorrow although I'm sure it is fine. If I turn controller 1, I don't see the LUNs. Looks like controller 0 has a problem, is there any other place to check it's status, health or functionality! It shows in the drop down list under Support\Place RAID controller module on or off, or is this by default?

The "DisableLunRebalance" registry key value is 0. I redistributed the Virtual Disks under Support Tab and it showed temporarily array optimal for less than a minute. I was able to get an updated information below, it shows correct distribution over controllers 0 & 1 for an instant but won't stay long :(
