Dell Precision 5820 Disk Drive Caddy Fault
I have two Precision 5820 workstations. However, the one that is now out of warranty has developed what appears to be a hardware fault.
One of the hard drive carriers has a status light that flashes amber all the time. On the face of it this means a faulty disk.It's the one at top left alongside the 1TB NVMe C: drive
However, I can put a brand new disk in and it still flashes. Move a carrier from one of the other slots into it and it still flashes. Move a working disk from another slot into the original carrier and it still flashes.So it would appear there is a fault internally?
With no disk in the carrier there are no LEDs illuminated.
Anyone have any ideas please?

Those bays are all in pair, each row share a single pcb with the hotplug connectors. As a consequence if the nvme kit is ordered during configuration (purchase) or if is manually swapped in later, it always affects both bays.

is a 3rd party quality known working adapter that could be installed in the bay of the failed drive, to use a standard nvme ssd.

Hello,
be warned that the drive right next to the nvme is not a sata drive. That slot ( due to the conversion allowing to put the nvme in the twin ) accepts either a similar nvme with the carrier, or an U.2 enterprise ssd.
Any standard sata/sas will never work there.
Since you removed the "faulty" original unit, can you write here the part number / code , or post a picture of the label ?

putting brand new disk in does not format the drive to the raid controller or the specific slot.
Drives installed new should be initialized by the bios raid utility so that they can rebuild when hot swapped.

Thanks - I had no idea the left bay was related in some way to the right one. Not that important as I don't need all four bays operational. It's a backup machine for the main one just in case of any disasters. The cost of a decent sized enterprise disk is not justifiable at the moment.

For ca £30 that isn't bad and I might get one anyway. I'll keep it in mind but I already have a PCIe card in there that has 2 x 2GB NVMe cards.

Yep,
definitely a pci-e card is way more cost effective since it can be for 2 or 4 units. That was just in case you don't want to keep an hotswap bay unused, later on

I decided to get a card but not from Japan! The same thing is available from Amazon (I'm in the UK) and made, amongst others, by StarTech who appear to make reliable stuff.

Works fine but make sure the NVMe stick is facing out to the left with the connector at the bottom when the caddy is inserted - it didn't work at first until I discovered it needed rotating 180deg!

Probably not explained very well but it is possible to put the unit into the Dell caddy rotated by 180deg if you don't check the back of the slot itself first to see where the connector it is.going into is located. It appears to go in okay but the connector isn't mated. Here is a pic of how it needs to be
I also had enormous trouble updating to the latest BIOS as it just would not run. Eventually found via a search it was the 4k display I have and since I don't have a lower res monitor (just changing the display res to lower doesn't help) I just gave up trying in case I bricked it. Eventually found on a forum that altering the BIOS to turn off Secure Boot and enabled Legacy ROMs did the trick and it would then update with the 4k monitor!

Er... no.
About 0.5mm between it and the plastic bar, even the exposed end only has about 4mm clear but might be able to extend something into the air space beyond?

It will be interesting to compare the temperatures of the one in the dell "adapter" vs this one , under load.

I don't have any way of measuring the temperature but have managed to fit it with a heatsink!
This came off Amazon and I bought 2 in a pack as I have another that needs a heatsink.The blue strips are the thermal pads that sit between the NVMe and the copper heatsink. There are quite a few spares of the pads for different fixing situations. It fits in very well to the Dell caddy and hardly moves the black plastic strip upwards! £14 Next Day and comes in 1x, 2x and 4x
