Dell T3420 Processor Upgrade
I have a Dell Precision Tower 3420 that I want to try and upgrade the processor. Currently, I have the 6th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-6 500 (Quad Core 3.2GHz, 3.6Ghz Turbo, 6MB, w/ HD Graphics 530). I want to know what processors i can upgrade to that will work with my motherboard.

Dell specs say 7th gen i7.
Also, a Google search for "dell 3420 7700" shows existing (used) 3420s that were built with 7th gen i7-7700 chips.
Given that it is listed on specs and showing as existing in builds, it should be a drop-in upgrade.
Be warned: That SERIES (which includes both the 3420 and the 3620) supports the 7700k. However, that 3420 MODEL almost certainly will not: the 7700K is 95W TDP instead of 65W, and I doubt the SFF case can handle the heat.
I would not put in the 7700k unless you can find an existing used 3420 with a 7700k (though I suspect it does not exist) AND unless you have tracked down the 95W heatsink.
Compared to the i5, the 700 will offer only marginal single-thread improvements... but you get 8 threads instead of 4 with the same TDP so that will help with anything that uses multiple threads. Might well be worth doing if you can get one cheaply and if you've already done the obvious "cheap speed" upgrades like SSD.
