No usb power and Black screen after bios update

Hi,

I recently purchased refurbished dell t7810 workstation with improved specifications.

Since the system took long time to boot, I thought it would be beneficial to update the BIOS as it was available on Dell website for its service tag <Private info removed.> here

So I downloaded this .exe file and ran it. It gave a message that the BIOS Is being updated. Don't switch off system. The system will restart. Etc.

I didn't do anything. It shut down and tried to restart. But it showed black screen. For very long time. Plus the wired mouse or keyboard were not responding. Eventually I had to turn it off.

Since then I have tried a host of suggestions available online. These include:

1>Jumper pin transfer from PSWD to RTCRST.

2>CMOS battery removal. Keeping away for 5 mins then reinstall.

3>graphics card removal then try power up.

4>removal of all rams except 1 for each processor, then turning it on

5>remove sata ssd then turning on.

6>Etched BIOS recovery file on a flash drive and plugged into usb ports. Pressed ESC + CTRL on power up but nothing came up on screen.

But Nothing has worked so far. The system when turned on shows white light in switch. Even that small disk writing light below start switch blinks in a while. The fans are running. But no power to usb and no signal to monitor dell P2414.

Please could someone help me how to get my system back on else this investment is going down the drain.

Maybe worth mentioning that it has RAID0 on two ssds in PCIE 3.0 slot. Could that be causing an issue.

Much thanks and regards

Hello,

if by any chance you are using a monitor with a native resolution higher of Full HD , try to use a different monitor ( there are issues if a 4k is connected when flashing, and it could also affect 2k, but definitely doesn't the rest )

PS

The boot speed of these workstations is not flashy as you would expect, and is by design (they do tests)

Hi,

I tried method by anne_droid.

There is no method on linux to writehdrfile.

I even tried bottles powershell, wine etc. Most tools are outdated (apt install firmware etc) Link

I read somewhere else and renamed the downloaded bios file like told here(fallback method at down bottom): https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000132453/how-to-recover-the-bios-on-a-dell-computer-or-tablet#Recovery_Tool

Etched on a formatted FAT32 via Linux disks and plugged in before starting.

But still doesn't work. Same black screen and keyboard lights don't light up(i pressed onto CTRL +ESC anyway).

For monitor I use Dell 2414H. I don't think it's 4k. It's resolution is 1920×1080.

What else can I try?

My gpu is nvidia rtx 4000

Thanks and Regards

AAaahhhhhhhhh

I was mistaken  ""So I downloaded this .exe file and ran it.""

I thought it would be an MS OS, hence the posting.

I note that the file 'T7810A34.exe' contains a larger file, "XPS8920_1.0.23.exe", so perhaps that could be applied?

SL2 11:31 T7810A34.exe
-rw-r--r-- 1 anne anne  6413784 Nov  6 11:22 XPS8920_1.0.23.exe

It was extracted using Peazip within Linux Mint. OR even given the extension .RCV to try from a fat32 usb stick.

Hello,

How were you able to extract this file? I am using Peazip on linux and it doesn't recognize this file  T7810A34.exe as an archive. It sees it as .exe and doesn't decompress it.

I also find XPS8920_1.0.23.exe here:

https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-in/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=dn41m

It seems it is for XPS 8920, Would this work for t7810?

Hello,

Nothing is working .

I cannot extract hdrfile even from a windows PC.

In command prompt I get error as </writehdrfile> command not recognized.

Apart from this holding CTRL +ESC then turning on the system also does not work.

Removing and reinstalling CMOS battery didn't work too.

Removing all RAM then turn on then off, again reinstall all ram does not work too.

The only option not tried is connecting system to a monitor via vga cable(the backside has 9 pin port)

But it's so hard to find such a cable nowadays.

Why does Dell has to publish this bios update. On top of that dell support is unhelpful.

What should I do?

Well the RCV file seems to exist....

Hi,

Thanks for responding.

The problem is when I turn on system  no usb is detected. Only there is white light in power button and fans are running. A cylindrical shaped light below power button also lights up sometimes.

Neither the keyboard or mouse or any USB drive is detected. So until this problem is there, anything like BIOS_IMG.rcv that I put into USB stick will not work.

Have you tried a Full CMOS / NVRAM reset ?

  • Disconnect AC power.

  • Press and hold the power button for 15–30 seconds to discharge.

  • Remove the coin‑cell battery from the motherboard.

  • Optionally move the CLR_CMOS jumper to the reset position if the board has it, wait 30–60 seconds, then move it back.

  • Reinsert the coin‑cell (or replace with a new CR2032 just in case) and reconnect AC.

  • Try to boot again while tapping F2/F12 immediately on power‑on (do not wait for the Dell logo).

Hello,

Yes, I tried these steps

Remove cover-> Remove CMOS attery->Transfer Jumper from PSWD to RTCRST-> transer jumper back to PSWD-> Shorted RTCRST with screw driver-> reinstall CMOS coin cell battery-> Reconnect power cable-> hold CTRL+ESC and Insert USB Flash drive and conncect display port with monitor-> Power ON CPU

It did not work.

I did not try F2/F12 tapping.

But I am too tired to again remove CMOS battery/
