I am pretty sure that most m.2 SSDs will plug directly into a PCI x4 slot without an adaptor; if you have room then you can probably skip the adaptor entirely.

This particular model came with 2.5" HD. There was also an option for T5810 to be equipped with PCIe-NVMe U.2 SSD drive.

I believe these are two different animals. Since I have this NGFF adapter and two NVMe SSd I thought making some use out of them.

I have since installed W10, and will try it again (sould work), but I was hoping to go for while back to W7 where it does not work.

Just plugged it in with recent fresh Win10 x64 install and it is still nowhere to be seen. Nowhere to be seen.

Successfully using "ASUS Hyper M.2 x16 Card V2" which carries {4 x NVME} SSD's, and plugs into a PCIE x16 slot.

Using this for multi-boot configuration in multiple Precision 5810 and 5820 machines with Centos7, Centos8 and Windows10, with each OS resident on its own SSD. Some with {4 x 1TB} and some with {4 x 500GB}.

All machines have latest BIOS. All visible in both BIOS page as well as F12 boot menu.

Thank you for the info.

At first I thought it is rather overkill for my application, but then I realized it sounds like a good idea.

Since I have 2 different M.2 SSD and both have B and M edge connector they should fit into this PCIe adapter. Albeit I will be limited to the old PCIe x2 due to B+M key.

The negative issue is that I will be very tempted to go and purchase couple of 970 PRO NVMe M.2 SSD 1TB.

I'll look who's got a best deal and pick one up.

Cheers

For cost effective solution, look for Crucial P1 - 500GB or 1TB depending on budget.

There's a very fast ADATA which is surprisingly close to the 970 pro in specs; see tomshardware for info.  I've been happy w/ mine.

Thank you both for SSD suggestion. I"ll have a look.

The ASUS Hyper M.2 x16 Card V2 arrived today, so I will give it a try with my leftovers Crucial MX500 1/2Tb

and Vaseky 480Gb. Both have B and M edge connector, so who knows what will happen.

Will get to it in next couple of days.

I usually post the results just in case someone is interested.

Never fails. Trying to make use of the spare parts.

Installed ASUS Hyper M.2 x16 Card V2 card into my T5820 with one Crucial MX500 M.2 2280 500GB SATA III 3D NAND Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) CT500MX500SSD4.

System did not even Post. Could not even get into BIOS. At first I thought maybe a bad card, so removed the drive and plugged the card back in empty. All is well.

I was always under impression B and M connector was more versatile and would connect to this card. I think I am wrong, with this card anyway. After looking at Asus specs. it appears the card is quite specific and will not take these drives. Assumption at present moment.

Since I have an encouragement from “tl_mdx” to the fact this card works in T5810 I am not giving up.

Now that I spent $90 for a card, looks like I may go shopping for an SSD which is supported by Asus for this card. And make sure it is “M” connector.

 https://dlcdnets.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/Add-on_card/HYPER_M.2_X16_Card_V2_device_QVL.pdf

Unless some good sole chimes in, and tells me what am I doing wrong.

Thanks to “hammarlund” I found ADATA XPG SX6000 PCIe 512GB 3D NAND PCIe Gen3x2 M.2 2280 NVMe 1.2 R/W up to 1000/800MB/s Solid State Drive (ASX6000NP-512GT-C) for CDN$ 142.23 which seems bearable. And it is supported.

Next dilemma is a choice between 3 scenarios.

  • To purchase a small 120 Gb large one supported card and see if it even works as maybe there is some difference between MOBO in my PC and “tl_mdx” PC.
  • Purchase one of 1Tb I really want and see if it works and then purchase the second one later to create RAID 1
  • Gamble it will work, and purchase two of 1Tb each.

Now that I exhausted myself, I am off to sleep and hopefully someone will come up with other option.

I know which option my wife favors, that is an easy guess.

Cheers All,

You need NVMe 2280 SSDs.

I'm using (all purchased from BH Photo, as well as the Asus card):

a) Crucial 500GB P1 NVMe M.2 Internal SSD (BH #CRCT500P1SSD; MFR #CT500P1SSD8)

b) Intel 1TB 660P NVMe M.2 Internal SSD (BH #INPEKNW010T; MFR #SSDPEKNW010T8X1)

c) Crucial 1TB P1 NVMe M.2 Internal SSD (BH #CRCT1000P1SS; MFR #CT1000P1SSD8)

The damage is done. Order is Placed.

Opted for 2 of SAMSUNG 970 PRO M.2 2280 512GB PCIe Gen3. X4, NVMe 1.3 64L V-NAND 2-bit MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-V7P512BW

$50 per drive more then others for 2-bit MLC. At least it is listed in approved SSD for HYPER M.2 X16 Card v2 by ASUS.

Uncontrollable obsessions are bad thing with no cure.

An update.

Received 2 of SAMSUNG 970 PRO M.2 2280 512GB PCIe Gen3. X4, NVMe 1.3 64L V-NAND 2-bit MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) MZ-V7P512BW.

Installed both of them into ASUS Hyper M.2 x16 PCIe card.

Plugged in a card and all good. both new SSDs showed up.

Nice useful project.

Thank you all who participated, as I would likely give up.

Here are some test results: Samsung 860 Pro, 2.5” SSD used with Samsung magician Rapid mode software is

still a winner.    Correction on last picture. It should read "with Samsung Rapid Mode"

Thank you for your story.

I'll do a similar project on my T7910. Hopefully, the Hyper M.2 is not going to have issues with the Nvidia Quadro K4200 video card.

Take care and stay tuned.
