Precision 3430 optical drive caddy

Service manual clearly shows there should be one.  My 3430 doesn't have one.

What part or parts do I need to fit an optical drive (assume a standard laptop type drive).

Thanks,
David

I know , it is considered bad form to answer your own post, but after over an hour on the 'phone to Dell, and then some waiting time, I received an email from the "Out of Warrranty" support team (even though the unit is brand new) giving me the part number for the ODD (Optical Disk Drive) Lock.

The ODD Lock which we are talking about is an Optional Part,

Part Number— 4H4R8

Part Desc----ASSY,LTCH,ODD,SLIM,SFF,D7,

They also said that this was supplied with the Optical Disk Drive if ordered specifically for the 3430.

I am quite honestly appalled that a part necessary to fit an industry standard 9.5mm optical drive is *not* supplied as standard with the computer.    Almost every computer supplier I have ever dealt with before has supplied a large set of assorted parts to allow fitting of almost anything into their case.  That Dell doesn't include this "in the box" is a disgrace.

I have yet to be told how much Dell want to charge me for this part - I may be back with an additional rant!

Mutter grumble ...

@perdrix our business model supports build to order systems so that the configuration matches exactly your needs. If the buyer doesn't order an optical drive there is no requirement for us to add the removable caddy to the system. That cost saving of not adding an unnecessary part is then passed on to the buyer.

Your original post mentions that you are missing the optical drive caddy. I find it strange that you would have an optical drive but not the caddy.

Do you have an optical drive already in the system?

If you want to add an optical drive to the system you require the following parts:-

Removable drive bay bracket - C1M40
The bracket that was mentioned in the previous post - 4H4R8
a SATA cable for data - do you have an additional one in the system (Most likely orange in colour)?
Optical drive itself - we have various options available depending on whether you want a dvd reader, dvd rewriter or a blu ray rewriter - which drive do you intend adding to your system?
