Precision 5820 Tower, keyboard and Bios issues after installing 2.50.1
Hello, up til the 2.50.1 bios update my USB Keyboard has been working fine in both the Bios, F12 boot choice, and Windows 11 Pro on a Dell Precision 5820 Twer. Last night I flashed the Bios to 2.50.1 from 2.48 with Dell Command Update classic 4.9, and while Windows works without any issues, Bios Setup has issues. I can press F2 to get into Bios, but after that the USB Keyboard is not navigating the bios tree (this is the older style type 2 bios). I have tried multiple usb ports on the back of the computer, and have tried multiple known good working keyboards. I am able to navigate with the mouse. However doing anything such as setting the date and time requires the keyboard. Pressing Caps Lock and Numlock the keyboard responds, and the LED indicators illuminate as expected.
I have since done a bios reset, one at a time, to Bios defaults and also Factory settings, this has not helped. I removed the Cmos CR2032 battery (which is new) and removed the power cord and let it sit overnight. As expected the bios clock changed however I could not adjust the time in Bios with a mouse (the keyboard still did not work). I tried jumping the bios reset pins on the motherboard, the Dell post acknowledges that the password was cleared (there was no password set in bios prior). Bit Locker is NOT enabled as this is a fresh install of Windows 11 Pro.
The boot choice menu (F12) has similar issues. You can press F12 and the Boot Choice menu prompt appears, but you cannot use the usb keyboard to move the cursor to change startup devices, such as a usb flash drive. It simply does not respond. However, that said, it does respond to a Control-Alt-Delete (the computer reboots). This is the Core i9 10900X with 32gb ram, 950 watt power supply, with the Sata cage, No M.2 SSD's in this configuration. There is also a Dell factory Wireless adapter and the AMD Radeon Pro wx3200 video card, and there's an Optical drive installed. This contains a Samsung Evo 870 500gb ssd, and two hard drives, a 1 and 2 Terabyte Seagate EXOS 7E8 Series Sata hard drives, all running in AHCI mode. Secure Boot is Enabled. Absolute Persistence module is disabled. Legacy boot is disabled. The Motherboard is Dell P/N 0X75JG
I updated the Uefi Certificates in windows as per this Dell technote, they were out of date. They updated updated but this did not make any impact in this issue.
It would be good to get this working again, I know I can adjust bios boot order with the mouse in Bios instead of F12, say if I wanted to boot my Macrium usb Rescue disk with the F12 sequence. Perhaps some Dell Engineer will find this and issue a Bios fix?

Hi all,
Thanks to the feedback shared in this thread, BIOS 2.50.1 has been removed from the Dell website and support applications.
Please stay tuned for updates. I'll post here as soon as I have any new information to share.
Thanks again to everyone who took the time to report their experience.

I can confirm the same issue with version 2.50.1. And downgrade to 2.48.0 is also blocked.
Other than F12 one-time boot menu, another very important place where it doesn't work is Windows Advanced Startup to enter Safe Mode etc..no key works except Ctrl+Alt+Del to simply reboot.
Kindly issue a fix, this makes it super difficult. I also tried to reset the bios to it's original setting, which deleted my UEFI boot paths now I simply can't add them back because boot path requires a name. Without a keyboard input that's impossible.

Hi
The On-Screen Keyboard (OSK) in Windows 11 is a built-in accessibility tool that allows typing via mouse, touchscreen, or switch devices without a physical keyboard. It can be instantly launched using the keyboard shortcut Windows + Ctrl + O or by typing osk in the Run dialog (Windows + R).
OR do you not get that far and I am misunderstanding the situation?
~~~~~~~~~~~ Ctrl + Esc may induce a BIOS repair/recovery.
@anne_droid ; this occurs before the Windows Operating System comes up, it's strictly a Bios/Keyboard issue. I am ordering a PS2 Dell Keyboard to see if bios setup responds to an old school PS/2 Keyboard, it will take some time to procure, as ps2 keyboards have all but disappeared from mainstream electronic/computer store shelves.
We have this issue as well. My Vintage PS2 keyboard is the only thing saving us.
Interestingly we had a Dell Tech onsite replacing a MB and then updated the BIOS resulting in our first sign of an issue. Dell Pro Support on the phone to him had no idea what the hell to do to resolve.
Apparently another MB is on the way
All,
Also, if possible, please share a video showing the issue. This will help us with the escalation.
@DELL-Nat M I would suggest to also keep an eye on the issue on the "twin" bios update that went out for the 7820/7920 , 2.52.1 being discussed in a parallel thread
I have this problem too on my Precision 5820. A BIG problem for me as I was unable to enter my Bitlocker PIN so I could not boot up my system.
I have found a limited workaround - if you simultaneously press the Windows key with the character you want (also holding down the shift key if required), you can type lowercase and uppercase characters, symbols and numbers.
Please issue a fixed BIOS update with a specific note listing the fix.
@JPROM this feels a big clue vs the issue ( aside being also a really good workaround for now )
@mazzinia_ Thank you, Mazzinia.
If a BIOS update is issued, could you privately email all of us posters on this thread to let us know there is a solution, please?
I can but my way to find out if there is a new bios is looking at this area
https://www.dell.com/support/product-details/en-us/servicetag (etc etc )
so basically the support area, searching for the system, and then looking at the drivers.
Basically what I think you already do.
After this experience, I'm reluctant to install any more BIOS updates unless they mention fixing this v 2.50.1 bug
Just to pile on. Having the same issue but I also have lost the ability to boot from an M2 drive. I agree with @JPROM Will not update BIOS again, expecially if it locks rolling backwards.
