Precision T5600 - Xeon E5-2680 V2 - not working?

Hey Guys,

I'm new on the Dell support forums but I have a question.
I recently picked up the Xeon E5-2680 V2 but it isn't working in the precision T5600 (Bios A18).
Is this because the CPU is rated at 10 cores - 20 threads and the board doesn't support that.
Or am I dealing with a broken CPU (actually 2 of them)

Thanks in common

Cheers,
Dennis!

Sorry, spec sheet says up to 8 cores.

It's not just the 10 cores - it's the "V2".  I don't believe the Precision T5600 supports V2 Xeons.

See Dell's list of supported processors   There might be other Sandy Bridge-EP Xeon E5-26xx series that work as well - see full list

Note the highest wattage officially supported CPU I see is the Xeon E5-2680 at 130W.  Two Xeon E5-26xx series processors, the E5-2690 (135W) and E5-2687W (150W) are over this.

@kluytmansd,

...actually even though the HW spec doesn't list the two CPUs with wattage over 130W, it explicitly says "Up to 150W".  So, E5-2690 (135W) and E5-2687W (150W) would probably be fine.

Thanks I should find those!

Also the spec list states the T5600 doesn't accept 32GB RAM sticks.
I have 7 of them running inside mine.

How will this work and the CPU won't?

Yah, a Dell moderator said the same thing - DIMM slots support up to 16GB.

Your T5600 may be somewhat older (2013?), but it hasn't been too unusual for people to attempt and exceed RAM specs in some of the older Dell's.  I see it more commonly in Optiplex's and it creates some some back & forth on the issue.

Your RAM may be untested and unsupported by Dell, but it works for you.

Exceeding RAM isn't the same as exceeding CPU specs.  Exceeding CPU specs is rarer.

Thanks! Looking for a supermicro board or i'll have to accept the 12 cores I have now.
