Where are you installing the 2nd drive ?

Bay 1 : nvme currently installed

Bay 2 : ( since the nvme in bay 1, has been converted to U.2 or nvme use ONLY )

Bay 3 : sata

Bay 4 : sata

Please install the ssd or hdd using bay 3 and/or 4

Wow, just restarted the computer with the SSD in the bottom bays and they are finally being recognized. Thank you so much!

The top right bay has the NVMe, the top left is the one displaying the flashing amber light on both of the drives I bought. I just installed the SSD into the bottom left and right bay, and the light does not come on at all.

Thanks @mazzinia!

On a side note :

"I already called Dell Technical Support and they tell me additional upgrades outside of Dell, i.e. the Samsung SSD, are not supported by them. "

whoever told you that ( dell support ) did a really bad job. They should have told you how the bays work , the way your workstation is configured.

It's not something I would expect from ProSupport..

yw

These are nice silent machines, just some parts of the documentation could be improved. And they could install a 6+2 & 6+2 gpu power cables instead of 6+2 & 6 ( personal opinion anyway )

Exactly, that is how I felt. They just kept sending me videos on how to insert the SSD into the driver bays; I was so close to returning the workstation despite loving how well it worked, because I could not believe the "pro" technical support was more clueless than I was. I called three times and each person said the same thing.

Grateful for the Dell Community!

The bay that feels stuck... will come out, just need some patience. Be a bit gentle... it happens ( actually is worse if it happens with the drive installed, since it adds more stress to remove the plastic drawer )

The light not being lit, is ok...

Power button .. just under there's a small white led that now will actually work once you use that hdd/ssd. To have the green light etc on the caddy, instead, I think you need to set "raid" in the bios. But personally I would not bother with that, since the whole green status light is tied to windows ( and I think the whole raid, even for a single disk, could be compromised if the cmos battery is changed. note, I'm not sure but I think I read something somewhere ).

( my setup in the 7820 is : 1tb nvme in bay1 , nothing in bay2 , 2 x 4tb exos enterprise hdds in bay 3 and 4 )

And no.. your ssd has a sata connector. the Bay2 accepts an nvme sas U.2 drive ( sas enterprise ssd, costs some kidney in comparison with a consumer one ) or an M.2 nvme pci-e ssd ( with the dell adapter you see installed in the bay1 , and that would cost you around 120 euro on ebay ).

Bottom line, you can use only Bay3 and Bay4 , for any sata hdd/ssd.

Alternatively you can convert the 5.25" optical bay to be used with 1 3.5" hdd, or 2 2.5" hdd ( using 2 dell kits ), or add more ssd (because the more is packed, the less airflow, so 2.5" hdds would suffer from heath on the long term if fit in various of those 3rd party kits ) storage hotswap bays with 3rd party kits in that bay.

They are; plus I was able to get mine on Cybermonday for 40% off so I got a really nice deal.

I believe my 5820 came with an adapter that is 6+2 & 6+2.

40% off, is a nice deal.

My 7820 is slightly older, so could be they initially went 8 + 6 and now 8 + 8

Sounds like that is what happened; without the adapter it is only 6+2 though

@mazzinia_ I'm going to necro this to say thanks from the future. I still could not find this in Dell's docs (or anywhere else, really).

@Jackie_VT my pleasure . Did you upgrade your 5820 or still same specs as cpu/ram ?
