Which CPU for 0X8DXD?

Dear experts,

 

I need any CPU, which fulfils following requirements:

  • supported by baseboard 0X8DXD
  • minimum of 6 cores
  • any single core at least as fast as any single core of the current Intel Xeon W-2125 (4 GHz/ 4.5 GHz Turbo)

 

I'd like to clarify the specific purpose:

  • I am running the simulation program Ansys Mechanical, which can only use 4 cores with the current license.
  • When a solution process is running, Ansys uses 100 % of each core, which is very desirable.
  • But in doing so, Ansys will inevitably share the utilized cores with any other program (Browser, E-Mail, CAD etc.), slowing each other down.
  • That's why the recommendation is to have at least 6 cores.
  • And my guess is, that any single core of any new CPU has to be at least as fast as any single core of the current CPU. Am I correct with this assumption?

 

So which one could it be?

What alternatives do I have?

I think you did an in depth research and yes, there's absolutely no point behind changing also the mb... it's more cost effective to either find an used bargain with already the cpu mounted, or a new system, at that point.

And yes, there's that throttling issue linked also to avx512, to keep into consideration.

I would say a W-2135 is a good option, unless you happen to find more cores at the same price

Anyways, I am not even sure anymore to purchase the W-2135, because, as already mentioned, the table I posted here, seems to show a 100 MHz slower performance on each core for AVX512. 

I am afraid, that at the end, maybe the 2 extra cores will be utilised for other work to relieve the simulation burdened 4 cores, which is intended & great. But the overall simulation time stays the same or worse, increases, since each of the 4 cores performs 100 MHz less on AVX512. 

But I can not find any source relating to the Frequency Behaviours for AVX512 ...

All Gen 2 cpus are cheaper vs Gen 1. Probably the manufacturing method is cheaper and probably they have less defects to throw away too.

I think that used on ebay, a 2135 "can" be found for around 350

Can you explain why the W-2245 is 200 € cheaper than the W-2135?

Apart from any chip shortage, even Intel's original "Recommended Customer Price" is 667 $ (W-2245) VS 835 $ (W-2135).

The W-2245 is in every way better when compared.

I would feel cheated to buy the more expensive but inferior CPU.

I guess that it all comes down to how many minutes/hours of computations are now done, daily. And how this would translate (as daily extra time) with that small Mhz difference.

May I offer an alternative ? Lets say you add 2 cores to be able to be more productive, and lets say doing the change would cost you 500 (this assumes that you do not resell the current cpu. If you do it, obviously what i'm writing is pointless) ... with those 500 you could buy a laptop (example) that could be used for the light tasks you would do on the 5820 while it works on a simulation.

I know this is not usually taken into consideration... but in your case the extra cores would be for light tasks, and light tasks can sort of be done everywhere. (again this works , economically, only if the old cpu is not resold)

Yep, nothing to say.... for that kind of workload you would require a gaming/workstation laptop, thus my unconventional idea would be not practical.

You could consider putting some alert out on certain keywords on ebay, in case something at a good pricepoint (the amount you would consider low enough to make you bite the bullet) shows up, too.

And it's never a waste of time, doing proper research to find out the real benefits of something
