Precision 5500 series laptops
My company has several users on Precision 5500 series laptops, specific models 5540, 5550, 5560, and 5570. Each model seems to have a similar set of issues and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced these and found resolutions for them. All are laptops are running Windows 10 Pro 22H2 and kept up to date.
The issues that have been reported are as follows.
- Power issues. Sleep settings seem to be ignored. Users reported closing the lid to transport only to find their bookbag is really hot because the unit never "shuts off". this kills the battery as well. We have installed all software and firmware updates and yet this continues.
- If a user is plugged into a monitor and their computer does sleep after inactivity - the only way to wake up the monitor is to restart the computer. Nearly all are using Dell UltraSharp 27" USB-C Hub Monitors - U2722DE connected via USB-C cable, but we have also tried USB-C to DP - same issue. I have read about the power issues (the monitor doesn't supply enough power to charge the Laptop) so we are plugging in the laptop with a power cable.
- Bluetooth issues - maybe. I have one user that wants to use his Apple AirPods for meetings. Typically he is fine for 15 to 30 minutes when suddenly the AirPod microphone just stops working. Like the mute is suddenly engaged., typically he has to disconnect and reconnect and he will be fine for another 15 -30 minutes. Frustrating to be in a meeting with him. Not sure if this is an AirPod issue - the user states the AirPods work fine when connected to other devices.
- There have also been sound issues when plugged into a monitor. If a user is in a meeting using the Dell speaker and microphone attachment, they may suddenly lose the microphone (much like the Bluetooth issue above). Some users have just disconnected from the monitor and continued on the laptop only - this tends to fix the audio issues.
- Some of the users work on very large, shared spreadsheets. Several of our Precision laptop users have reported that Excel crashes while working on them. However, we also have a lot of users working with Dell Latitude 7000 series. Same shared spreadsheets, the same Office 365 setup, but the Latitudes don't crash.
I have read about other folks having problems with the dedicated GPU's in these laptops - some of the issues I am seeing sound similar, but I have yet to see an answer to these issues - other than using a docking station.
Any similar experiences out there - would love some resolutions if there is one.
