Precision 7750 Keyboard Issues

I am a pretty fast typist.  I keep my hands positioned so that only my fingertips touch the keys or keyboard.  Can someone tell me why, as I am typing along; the cursor will suddenly be several letters, words, or even lines back-- typing in the middle of what I have already laid down?  Or, it will highlight several lines of type and delete them altogether, inserting the next character that I type.

This is the second Dell laptop I have used.  The previous one was an Inspiron.  Both have the same issue.  I have even tried slowing my typing speed to avoid the problem.  That doesn't help.  None of the other laptops (Asus, HP, etc.) that I have used, have ever had this issue.  It's rather annoying to have to stop every 15 words or so to correct the errors caused by the cursor jumping back.

Is there a fix, or is this just a feature we have to deal with?

Turn off your touchpad.

I wouldn't go so far as to turn off your touchpad, but the problem is related - the touchpad is getting a signal from your hand to "move" the cursor.

I'm on Win 11, so you can go to Settings>Bluetooth & Devices>Touchpad>Taps and change the sensitivity to "low" - it is probably "medium" right now.

That should solve your issues.

If you are on Win10, then go to Settings>Devices>Touchpad>Taps - so very similar to Win11

Others are on the right about the touchpad likely being the issue, but let me clarify what is probably going on...

your touchpad not only allows you to place a finger on it and slide it around to move the mouse pointer, but it also has many "tap" features.  when editing a document in a word processor you first position the mouse pointer to where you want to start typing... and then you start typing and the cursor follows along with you, but the mouse pointer remains wherever it last was. if you inadvertently tap the touchpad then the cursor snaps to the position of mouse pointer, and it makes you feel like the computer is insane as the next words you type appear in an unexpected location.

this scenario is far more common with untrained typists who have their wrists always resting below the keyboard, but it can happen to anyone, or even if jewelry is danglingly down to tap the touchpad.

go into your touchpad settings and disable the 'tap' features and that should solve the issue.

Some users have downloaded the 3rd party TouchFreeze software which "disables" the touchpad when typing.

Well, Shoot!!  I didn't turn off my touchpad, however I have tried adjusting the settings.  It didn't help.  I've tried the Dell suggestion of using an external keyboard.  Although it is awkward and unwieldy, THAT WORKED.  It's the Dell keyboard. It has happened on both Win 10 and Win 11.  Thanks for the tip!
