3100cn monochrome printing on MAc?

We (PC users) gave our daughter and her family (Mac users) a 3100cn for Christmas. While still here she connected her portable by usb, loaded the Driver for the Mac from the Dell CD and could print color fine. She could not print black and white from the drum cartridge. She could print text in black and white, but the 3100cn was clearly treating it as if it was color-- 5 ppm with all the internal whirring of the color cartridges. We hooked up my son's PC portable, could set print to black and white, and pages shot out. We looked for somewhere on the MAC (OS X 3.2...) for a similar setting and could not find it. We also failed to find a way to set this from the Printer's own menu.

My daughter is now at home, a few hundred miles away. She downloaded the driver that Dell has on their site for MAC OS, dated 12/15/2005, but said it appeared to be the same as the driver that she had loaded from the Dell CD.

Ultimately the plan is to put this printer on her home network, but it would be nice to find out how to print manuscripts from the MAC at 20ppm before doing that.

I have scoured Dell and Mac user groups. On one we were told:

"If the driver was installed from the Dell CD you go to the Drop down that defaults to:
*Copies and Pages
and Choose:
*Printer features
-There you have a choice of Color and BW among other things."

I sent this to my daughter who responded: "the option you sent me doesn't exist in my printing mode."

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
