5100cn MPF does not stop turning, causing loud noise.
We recently aquired a Dell 5100cn, in good condition, from an auction. I replaced the imaging drum and roller and put it into service. One week ago, the MPF started having an issue, it will not stop rotating, even though the MPF is not in use. This occurs on startup or regardless of which source you use: Tray 1, 2 or 3. When printing the MPF roller constantly turns, and the lifter bounces, causing a loud banging noise. Other than the noise, there are no paper jams and the print quality is excellent. Is there any way to fix this, even disabling the MPF?

I think you have a problem in the area of the MPF solenoid. The following image is an excerpt of something else that I've edited to show you the parts you need to examine. The Front, outer-Duplex door is open (use round button on the side) and the front-right cover was removed for clarity. (in fact, in this image, the Outer Duplexer was removed from the printer)
The MPF solenoid has an arm that protrudes and has a hook on the end and catches a cog on the inner shoulder of the MPF drive gear, preventing it from turning, except when the solenoid is energized.... once per paper feed. If the cog is broken from the gear or the solenoid damaged, you'll see just what you're seeing. Another possibility is the control signal for the solenoid is always on, causing the solenoid to be permanently energized. If you don't care about the MPF, you can trace the wires back to an interconnect and unplug it, or, just remove the MPF drive gear. Of course, either of these actions will leave the MPF permanent disabled.
Note: If you find that the Solenoid is always energized (turn the printer off while the door is open and watch it), I would recommend disconnecting the solenoid instead of removing the gear. The circuit that controls this is only meant for periodic operation; once per feed cycle. If the solenoid is always on, the circuit may eventually "toast" and cause other problems in the controller.

Addenda: Ensure you use genuine Dell toner in this machine. The company that makes these printers for Dell has a trade secret on the toner formulation. Compared with 3rd party toners, it is not the same and the 3rd party junk will eventually ruin the inner workings of the printer. If the 3rd party guarantee's it'll work, get that in writing and what they will cover if the machine is damaged. Their tune will change.....

Thanks for the diagram. It was easy enough to remove the gear for a temporary fix. I'll be able to disconnect the solenoid later.

Glad to help..... remember, you only need to disconnect the solenoid if it's permanently energized. Otherwise, just leave the gear out.
