check your encoder strip. its the transparent belt at the back of your cartridge carrier. clean it with dry lint free cloth. pinch the encoder strip on the right-hand side of the cartridge carriage and pull your fingers across it toward the right-hand side of the printer. turn on the printer then the printer will put back the cartridge at the center then clean the other side of the printer too..

if same issue occur try to check if the encoder strip is broken. and check it its aligned still to its guide. the guide is where the encoder strip sits right at the back of the cartridge carrier. its somewhat colored gray or white..

This is a step-by-step Troubleshooting Wizard. Use the options below to navigate.

STEP: Locate and remove obstructions in the print path of the Dell 922 printer.

Locate and remove any obstructions such as pens, paperclips, bottle tops, or other small objects that could be interfering with the printer functionality.

  1. Power off the printer by pressing the Power button.
  2. Lift the scanner unit and make sure the kickstand locks into place. (Figure 1)

Figure 1 - Engaging the Kickstand

  3. Verify that there is nothing obstructing the paper path or the path of the cartridge carrier. (Figure 2)

Figure 2 - Locating Obstructions in the Carrier Path

This is a step-by-step Troubleshooting Wizard. Use the options below to navigate.

STEP: Clean the encoder strip.

CAUTION

CAUTION:

As you perform the following steps, be careful when handling the encoder strip as it can break easily.

It is possible that dust can gather on the encoder strip which will make it very difficult for the printer to determine where the carriage is on its track. To clean the encoder strip, perform the following steps:

  1. Power down the printer and unplug the power.
  2. Lift the cover on the printer.
  3. Using a dry, lint free cloth, pinch the encoder strip on the right-hand side of the cartridge carriage and pull your fingers across it toward the right-hand side of the printer (Figure 1).

Figure 1 - Opening the Cover
  4. Plug in the printer and power it on.
  5. Open the cover.
    The cartridge carriage centers itself.
  6. Using a dry, lint free cloth, pinch the encoder strip on the left-hand side of the cartridge carriage and pull your fingers across it towards the left-hand side of the printer. (Figure 2).

Figure 2 - Finding the Encoder Strip

STEP: Check the position of the encoder strip on the Dell AIO printer.

The encoder strip is a plastic strip with small markings over its entire length. The strip may appear to be translucent. To verify the position of the encoder strip, check the following:

  1. Remove the power connection from the printer.
  2. Slide the cartridge carrier to the “left of middle” inside the printer.
  3. Grasp the top part of the carriage belt and move it gently to the left.(Figure 1)

Figure 1 - Position Carriage so that the Encoder Strip Guide is Accessible

  4. Place a finger under the encoder strip on the right-side of the cartridge carrier.
  5. Check to see if the encoder strip has slipped out of the guide. (Figure 2)

Figure 2 - Verify the Position of the Encoder Strip

To re-position the encoder strip, perform the following steps:

  1. Remove the power cord from the unit.
  2. Lift the lid of the unit to expose the inside, where the printer cartridges are located.
  3. Gently slide the ink cartridge carrier to the middle of the printer.
  4. Gently move the top part of the printer belt to the right.
  5. Using an index finger, gently push encoder strip down and then back up, to get it back into the slot located on the back of the ink cartridge carrier.

NOTE: There is a small slot on the back of the ink cartridge carrier, which the encoder strip fits into.
  1. Gently press the strip first to the rear, and then forward, to ensure that it is seated correctly.
  2. Manually move the ink cartridge carrier to the left, then to the right, to check the positioning of the encoder strip.
  3. Once the encoder strip has been re-seated, close the lid to the unit.
  4. Re-connect the power supply to the all-in-one device.
  5. Press the power button.

well emcee i got in there with my big hands and followed your instructions step by step. after following the procedure a few times (where you press the encoder strip back and then forward) i just printed a clean alignment page and an almost perfect test page. the key for me was overcoming my fear that i was going to break the encoder strip. the last time i tried it  i actually pressed the strip against the back wall and then brought forward quite firmly. that seems to have done the trick. i hope im not jinxing myself by saying this.                thanks again emcee!

well emcee, i think i semi jinxed myself in that i printed a couple of things and then the printer started making banging noises and then stalled again. i pressed the encoder strip to the back wall again and then pulled it forward  and now it seems to be ok. i think this thing is on its last legs. do you  know of a good all in one printer? this one made about 7000 copies. is that high or low for the lifetime of a printer? any info will be appeciated.   thanks

after following advice seen on here regarding another printer model, i looked and see that there is a thin belt that appears to have come loose from it's mounts. it is located behind the print cartridges. any suggestions on how to fix this?? thanks

hello, i am getting this same message for my 966 all in one printer. following the instructions seen here, i looked and see a thin cable that looks like it has come loose from its mounts (i guess that's the correct terminology - i'm rather techologically impaired when it comes to things). is there a simple way to fix this so my printer will work?? thanks
