942 Communication Error

I recently purchased a E520 from Dell with Vista 32bit already installed on it. I am having issues with connecting my printer. I have a 942 all in one printer from Dell that was hooked up to my old computer that was running XP. I have been reading the messages and responses concerning installation of printers. I have tried uninstalling, deleting folders, downloading drivers, etc..... every thing that has been suggested with no luck. I keep getting a communication error. I am very frustrated. I am in need of my printer. If I had known this new computer with Vista was going to be such a problem, I wouldn't have purchased it. Is there anyone who has had some progress or might have another suggestion to help with the installation?

Same problem here,AIO 962,VIista Home Premium, tried all the fixes and nothing works.
Worked with Dell techs for 2 hours, couldn't help.Transfered to XPS people they said the new
driver would be available in April.Downloaded the new driver, same problem, commuication error.
I have emailed the XPS techs twice with no reply.Sounds like we really have a problem here.
Dell, why don't you address this and post it on the dell.com homepage so we all know whats
going on?

I have been trying since the Dell new Drivers for the Vista 32 bit came out and cannot get my Printer 942 connected where it will work on the computer.  Everyone said no problem when the drivers come out all you do is install them and presto "Print".  NOT SO - I have been on the phone so many hours with Dell it is disgusting.  Since I purchased another brand Computer Dell keeps telling me to contact the other manufacturer.  All they do is have me disconnect the Dell printer altogether.  At least i have one printer up and running, but I really wanted to get the 942 printing.  i am using it now only for copying.  If anyone gets a answer that could help please let me know too.  I'm frustrated with Dell.

Please look at the sticky at the top of the forum for the solution. The communication error is caused by some XP driver files being left on your system.

This one may also help.

Do you mean I might have some drivers from the XP from the printer 942?  The computer is brand new and never had the XP Windows.

Well if you have a problem with a communication error or if the printer shows offline then the above will fix it. I saw a post where a user has plugged in the printer before installing the driver and Windows had begun to install the driver it thought was needed. This caused a problem and was fixed by this procedure.

I printed out the directions and gave them a try but to no avail.  Right now I am too stressed out to function properly because my dad passed away, my husband had a nervous breakdown and the doctors told me I probably have a blood clot in my heart.  Maybe I'll try again in a couple of weeks when things hopefully settle down.

I have followed all the directions you sent me and still cannot get my Dell 942 printer working with my HP computer W/Vista 32 bit.

When I double click printer (942) I do not get a choice of uninstall.  To uninstall I must go to "start - all programs chose Dell printer then uninstall.  Nowhere do I see "delete the driver software for this device. Also when trying to install the drivers you stated "click + next to printer drivers it is nowhere to be found.  All the other instructions are clear and I do them but I still cannot the Dell 942 printer working with the Vista.

Also, someone recommended putting in the disc for XP and uninstalling then.  The whole trouble is i do not have a disc for the XP since I gave the old Dell computer away.  I only saved the drivers and utilities disc for printer 942.  The Dell Printer always worked perfectly on the old XP system.

Is there anything else i can try?

Yes, who ever said put in the disk was correct, but not the disk for the old computer the disk for the printer. The disk will have an uninstall option. The problem is that the XP drivers have been installed. The following thread has complete instructions on how to remove the XP drivers and install the Vista drivers.

and the printing problems continue on and on and on and on and on and on and on.....best advice, just send the dell printer back and go buy a different brand.....a brand that knows how to make their printers actually work without having to decipher registry keys and all kinds of ridiculous work around instructions!  .....Dell is ridiculous!

I cannot figure it out how to install the 942 all in one printer with the drivers on my HP computer running  Vista 32 bit.  No matter what directions I am given I can't get it.

I am now giving up and using the printer as a copier machine.

HELP! I have been unable to make my Dell AIO 942 printer work in a new computer operated by Vista. I followed the instructions posted on the Dell website, deleted all previous files, downloaded and installed file R151557.exe, but still does not work. The printer shows as being installed, but when I send a page to print, I get a message that the printer is not communicating with the computer - to check the USB cable. I have removed and reattached the cable several times, have re-started the computer several times and still does not work. It worked fine with the old computer with Windoes XP.
What else can I do?

That's correct - give it up and get another printer.

This 942 worked great with windows XP, but it will not work with the Vista system.
