966 is getting on my nerves!

Hi!  New to the forum here and I'm having a problem with my Photo 966.  This thing worked like a charm for a few years, but not I'm about to throw it out the window.  Everything works fine for a while, then out of nowhere it happens.  I can no longer print.  I can send a job, and it spools, but the printer never starts.  I've went through the delete/reinstall and that does fix the problem, but I HATE doing this  every other week.  Something is causing this and Dell cannot tell me why.  I haven't a clue.  This problem started about 1 1/2 years ago, and since then, I bet I've had to reinstall 20+ times.  HELP!

I'm running XP.  Sorry, forgot to mention that!

 sabruce01,

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove ant stuck print jobs in the queue.

Disconnect the printer.

Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer.

You can then install the printer from the disk or use the privers from Dell's website.

Links to the patch/drivers can be found at...

Dell 966 Photo All-In-One Printer owners thread (W7)

Also try these tweaks.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)

Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.

Go to each USB Root Hub and right click on it, left click properties, left click power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Restart your computer.

--------------------------------------

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager). Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

I did all of this and the printer started working.  However, today it has quit AGAIN.  Everytime this happens I end up having to delete then reinstall the driver just like I did here.  What is happening here on my driver?

sabruce01,

Next time you go to print, click on file, print and please make sure the proper [printer is selected. You'll need to do this with all your applications so the proper printer gets selected.

Yes, the proper printer is selected.   This is the default printer.  It had been working fine (as always) then all of a sudden it will no longer pring.  I can go to my printers page and see the job pending under the Dell 966.  This is the same way it has been acting for about a year now.  I'll go and delete the driver, reinstall it, and it will work fine for a while, then simply do this same thing.  I'm really getting tired of having to install a driver over and over and over............

 sabruce01,

Is this printer connected with a USB Cable or the network adapter in the printer.

Make and model of your computer. 32-bit or 64-bit?

 sabruce01,

I'm thinking that you have a USB Port problem. Did you recently reinstall the operating system?

Maybe try posting about your USB Port issue in the DELL DESKTOP FORUM.

Whyen you go to print, click file, print. Make sure the proper printer is selected. You need to do this for every application on your computer, Word, Adobe Reader, etc.

I thought the same thing several months ago.  When I reinstalled it back then, I switched ports where my mouse had been plugged in.  Mouse still works in the original port the printer was in, and the printer experiences the same problem.  I've switched it around to several ports (even on different cards) and still have the same results.

When it goes down, it spools the print job and I can see it waiting when I pull up my printer, but it simply does not move on.  The only way I can delete or cancel the print job is to restart the computer.
