966 Printer - I can print a test page but I cannot print from Windows

First off, know that both black and color ink cartridges are below so-called recommended levels.

If I print a test page using the menu button on the printer, the page prints fine.

If I print a test page from Windows XP (I am using a USB connection), the paper moves along the paper path, and appears to be ready to print.  I want to say that the printer sounds like its printing - the heads sound like they are going back and forth.  The printer never ejects the paper ...  when I power off the printer, the paper is kicked out ...  and is blank.  My question:  would the ink level play a role in this?  Thanks for any and all replies.

mjmoens,

It is possible the below level ink cartridges are causing the problem. It also could be possible that the drivers might not be installed properly. Below, I included this information.

Dell Series 7 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges.

Dell Series 7 ink cartridges can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's Website.

First, let's make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.

Disconnect your printer. Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

XP Drivers

Vista 32-bit Drivers

64-bit Drivers

All other drivers

Install the proper drivers, you'll be prompted when to connect your printer.(powered on)

When finished, install the latest firmware for the 966 printer.

Choose your printer. Beneath your printer, select your operating system. You'll be redirected to another page. Then click on show all steps. It will walk you through the installation process.

Ok, I tried your suggestions, but resulted in no change.

Any other ideas?  I'm still suspecious of the low ink levels in both catridges.  I put an ad on Craigslist, hoping someone would let me borrow their known good ink cartridges.  I'm in the Bakersfield, CA area.

Question:  I'm using a Dell laptop wirelessly ...  is it possible to use an ethernet crossover cable from the laptop ethernet port to the printer ethernet port?
