A960 printer offline

I've got a new HP notebook computer with Windows Vista Premium and I can't get it to work with my old printer, a Dell A960.  I've removed the old drivers and put the new vista driver from the Dell website on. I've gone through the whole charade about five times, and I keep getting the same problem.
The printing goes to the listing of 'waiting' docs, and shows 'Printing - Offline' in the status column.  In the Control Panel printers section, the printer also shows as offline. I've tried everything I can think of.

Can anyone tell me how to change it so that the printer's online (I assume that would fix the problem)? I know lots of people are having similar problems, but I can't find one the same.

You probably already tried this but anyway :

In the windows control panel, goto the printers section. Right click on the printer. In the pop-up menu, check if it states Use printer Online (it's normally the 5th item from the top).
If it says "use printer offline" , left click on it to change it.
