Now let's fix your wireless network first. These settings are recommended for your wireless router, so your communications will work.
Update the firmware in your wireless router. Manufacturer's website, make & Model needed.
Broadcast SSID(You may want to change this to make it easier to connect)
Use WPA Security. Most wireless devices work best with this type of security.
Mixed b and g mode(n if available)
Use channels 1, 6 or 11. Most devices work better on these channels.
Save and exit. Power everything off for 30 seconds. Power everything back on, wait 30 seconds, now try to connect.
Now setup your wireless print server. You should have to enter SSID, securty and password.
Now for the printer.
Install the proper drivers. Choose network. Select that you're using a wireless print server and follow the instructions.
Scanning
Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.
Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.
If you have the printer disk, double click my computer. Go to the drive with the Dellxxx disk and right click on it, left click explore. Go to the OCR folder and double click on it. Go to setup.exe and double click on it. This will install the OCR Program.
I followed your directions as stated and still got the error message when trying to open the AIOC. I also tried to scan while the printer was attached to the computer and it was coming up as a fax. Thank you for your patience.
I have the 942 set as default. When connected by USB, the printer does give the options for programs to send the scan to. When wireless, it still does not indicate anything.
Attach the 3300 to your computer using the USB Cable and insert the 3300 disk. Follow the instructions. It should ask you for the network ID, type of security and password.
Install the drivers, choose network, choose I'm using a wireless print server(if you do not see this, then choose add printer and you should see it then) and follow the instructions.
I suspect that I have found the root of the problem.
Pudgy, you were stating that I should be able to toggle the computer. I was not able to. When installing the AIOC software, I tried to manually configure the software to find the right server. The "Printer is shared via a network wireless print server" was not available. The help window stated that some models of printer cannot support the AIOC through a wireless print server connection (as opposed to attaching the printer to a computer then sharing the printer). Thank you for your help!
You were helpful to this person, so hopefully you don't mind me pinging you for your advice on same:
I cannot scan with my AIO 942, but I can print. I tried your advice and ran the clean-up utility. I reinstalled the drivers (Vista 64 bit) but still have the same issue. I did restart etc, but no joy. Interestingly, I can preview a document on the printer, but when trying to actually scan....nothing. After 5 minutes I get a message on the printer that says: "The All in one driver did not respond...please ensure the driver software is installed"
If using a USB Cable, follow the instructrions below. geekfella, please make a new post. I actually prefer that everyone makes a new post, so I don't confuse information in the posts with the person that had the origional post. I also will not mix printer posts because the firmwares are different and installing the wrong firmware can and will turn the printer into a huge paperweight.
Please try re-installing the printer this way and then tell us what happens. Please make sure your computer has all the Windows Updates, especially .net framework, which is needed to run many applications. Also make sure you have the latest Java.
Disconnect your printer. Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Restart your computer.
The computer is a new Dell Studio. Printer is connected via USB. It used to be linked to my old Dell, which was running Windows XP. When I attached the 942, it searched and found the drivers automatically (same thing after I ran the clean-up utility you recommended previously). This was the first time I tried to use the scan function since I set it up. Other functione work as they did before.

I worked on the wireless connection as you directed me to. Thank you very much! I have regained printing ability.
I attempted to install the AIOC software but it crashed in the middle of opening for the first time. I am still not able to scan wirelessly.
Thank you for your patience with this.

What you need to do, one more time, is to run the patch to remove the printer.
Restart your computer(a MUST)
Install the proper drivers, again and the Dell All-In-One Center will install.

Go to printers and faxes and make sure the 942 printer is the default.
When I scan, I use the printer to scan to my laptop. I have to select the computer, list of applications to send the scan to.
Did it ask you for this?

Let's keep this simple. Use the patch from above to remove the printer.
Restart your computer.
Make sure to use the recommended wireless router settings, or you will not get the proper communications.
After router is done, now setup your wireless print server/printer.
3300 Utility
3300 Firmware
Attach the 3300 to your computer using the USB Cable and insert the 3300 disk. Follow the instructions. It should ask you for the network ID, type of security and password.
Install the drivers, choose network, choose I'm using a wireless print server(if you do not see this, then choose add printer and you should see it then) and follow the instructions.

Rick....that did the trick. You are a printer genius!
I now also have the Dell All In One Center back that the previous driver software left out.
Much appreciated, Simon.
