AIO 964 Vista Problems

Question

My problems are slightly different than the others I've read on this board.  I'm using a new Vista Ultimate install, NOT an upgrade from XP.  I can print to the 964 just fine so I know it's working.  When I try to configure the printer from AIOC, I get a communication error so I can't set the default program for scanning or do any other setup functions.  Also, on XP machines, there's a Dell AIO 964 FAX printer listed and I can send documents through the printer's FAX modem using that.  In Vista, there is no Dell FAX printer listed.  Can I install it from the CD?  If so, how?  I've tried running every setup program I can find on the CD but none install the Dell FAX printer.

It's connected by USB.

communication error is propably bcs. of FW, have you mcaffy or something

BCS?  I'm not familiar with that acronym.  I'm using Microsoft Live OneCare for my virus protection.

Same problem here also with the same OS and printer. It is also the same exact problem with the Lexmark AIO printer because Lexmark makes Dell printers. I finally gave up on the Lexmark techs who seemed to be stuck on the uninstall/install flow chart. After a few weeks of going around with them and not getting the proper tech help, I purchased this Dell AIO 946. Well with no surprise the CD ran exactly the same as the Lexmark one with the same install problem. I figured this time though with Dell direct connect a Dell tech would be able to fix this problem much better. After almost 3 hours on the phone last night i had to finally stop him as it was going on 1AM here in Texas. He promised to call me back tonight to work on it some more. I also heard this from the Lexmark techs, who never called back. I seem to think the Dell tech will as they have better tech service IMO. The main problem is that it will not install the scanner driver. The machine prints and copies fine. It just will not scan. I haven't even gotten as far as the fax yet. (crosses fingers) The Dell tech did go through my machine and work it over a lot better than the Lexmark techs. He finally got the machine to recognize the printer on reboot. Something it has not done before. But alas, no install of the scanner driver. For some reason the machine just will not install the scanner driver no matter how you try to install it. Not sure if he was using a flow chart or not, but it did seem like he was going around in circles at times. I have not had one problem with Vista since I got this machine a few months ago. I heard/hear about all the horror stories about it though. Like I said though, I have been lucky. It would seem that with all the new machines being purchased along with the AIO printers, that this problem would have been solved by now. Or at least the flow charts updated to reflect the problem. The Dell tech did say he has seen it before on the XP OS but this was his first time on the Vista OS. He said that it might be the machine and not the printer. That another type of tech would have to look at it. Which is exactly what the Lexmark tech told me. I'm beginning to think that all the techs, Dell/Lexmark are outsourced from the same overseas place. Though as I said, I believe Dell techs could be better at working this problem out. It is a lot easier since the can just Dell Connect to my machine. It is frustrating though to have to go through all this again with another AIO. The brand new AIO Lexmark is going up on eBay this week. I would hate to put this Dell AIO up on eBay also.

Please try this.   Removing XP drivers and LEXBCE from Vista (for the 720, A920, 922, A940, 942, A960, 962, 964 and 966 printers)

It only fixes those people who are having a communication error or where the printer shows as offline although the drivers have been installed properly. I'm not having a communication error that shows the printer offline and one of my drivers is not installed properly. So how is this fix going to help me? The printer prints fine and copies fine. It just will not scan as it will not install the scanner driver.

If you will take note the first part was left off. I was talking to a user who was having problems with his 3300 wireless adapter and it not printing and was explaining to him that the problem he was experiencing with the 3300 wireless adapter not communicating is different than the printer not communicating with a computer.

The fix in the link I gave you will help you get your printer to work when it is connected to your computer. You should do this first before any networking, if that's what you are trying to do. The problem with the 3300 wireless adapter is different and still being worked. If you are trying to connect your printer to your computer and it is showing a communication error or shows as offline please go through the fix that was posted above in the link.

If you do have a 3300 wireless adapter you are trying to get to work please make sure your printer works directly with your computer first. Then you can install the 3300 wireless adapter, but the software must be run in compatibility mode. It will work this way, here's the link if you want to try.
