Answering machine and fax machine answering
We just got DSL and I have been unable to figure out how to make the answering machine answer calls and the fax machine answer faxes. My parents have theirs set up where the answering machine says either leave a message or press start after the beep. If you wait on the line or press start, it receives the fax. Do you have to have certain software for this?

If your answering machine is separate from your fax machine, you will need an external phone/fax switching device. If you plan on using your computer to receive faxes and as a answering machine, you must have a voice/fax modem. You will also need software that will do both functions. Most voice/fax modems come with software that will do the job.
DSL only figures into the picture if your telephones use POTS filters. If your telephones need POTS filters, a switching device or your computer's fax/modem will probably need one.
