Anyone else have networking issues with the V715w?

Twice in the past maybe 9 months or so my Dell V715w printer just "disappears" off my LAN. Vanishes. Gone. You still have the icons in Printers and Faxes and on the desktop, etc., but you can't communicate to the printer. It's plugged into the switch, it's turned on, etc. Lights are on but no one's home.

In both cases I have tried uninstalling the printer software and re-installing but it still can't find the printer on the LAN.

The solution both times has been to reload the firmware via USB and then reload the printer software on the computer(s). My experience has been that the only way to get the V715w correctly installed is to run through the Dell installer again.

The only thing that happened this past time is that I recently installed a new switch which necessitated unplugging the printer from the LAN for a few minutes. It occurs to me that the first time this happened I also disconnected the printer from the LAN briefly.

I tried using the Setup > Network Setup wizard on the printer to give it a fixed IP address on the theory that when it came on the LAN after being unplugged it may have been reassigned a different IP address than it had during setup, but when I pressed OK at Network Setup it just went blank for ~10 seconds and came back to the main Setup menu. Now I can go in and set a fixed IP address, but I've just been through 90 minutes of getting the damned thing working so I can print one lousy page and the thought of running the setup wizard again makes me want to pull my own fingernails out.

Has anyone else seen anything like this? Anyone want to bring their Dell - well, actually I think it's a Lexmark in Dell clothing - printer to a location in No. CA and I'll bring mine and we can have a BBQ, destroy a bunch of them and generally get some enjoyment out of them finally?

caseyscherm,

Electrical storms and power flickers usually mess up communications of wireless devices.

Power off the ISP modem/router and your wireless router(if any) wait 30 seconds, then power on the ISP modem router. Wait 15 seconds, the power on the wireless router(if any)

Restart your computer and try to connect.

Unplug the wireless printer from the wall. Wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. Wait about 60 seconds. What color is the wireless adapter on the printer? Green or orange?

My solution has been to PRESS and HOLD the power button for about 5 seconds to "soft reboot" the printer.  It comes right back online, as most likely its IP adress is still reserved on your router.

Hi Casey,

I have had similar problems with my Dell V715w printer, but until now, never put it together with it occurring when disconnected from the LAN. In my case, my router needs to reset about once a month and POOF!  No more printer.  So, it is consistent with the printer disconnecting from the LAN as in your case.  My solution has been to PRESS and HOLD the power button for about 5 seconds to "soft reboot" the printer.  It comes right back online, as most likely its IP adress is still reserved on your router.

Now, WiFi is another story altogether. It just arbitrarily stops communicating wirlessly.  I have stopped using that feature altogether because it seems to go out everytime someone is in a hurry.  Using LAN has proven to be much more dependable.

Hope it helps!

Just getting around to reponding to posts. Apologies for the long lag time.

My printer is on the wired LAN so whatever it is, it isn't a wireless issue.

In any event since reloading the firmware and reinstalling the printer on every computer in the house, I haven't had any more issues and my impulses to pull out my own fingernails and/or barbecue the printer have subsided.

Thanks for your response.

Thanks for the reply.

In my case I tried a soft reboot as well as unplugging the printer from the wall. No dice either way.

Yeah, the router holds and reassigns the preferred address, but something in the printer firmware goes badly wrong. The network tool on the menu seems to be "short circuited": instead of showing me an IP address or letting me assign one, it just sits for a few seconds and then goes back to the previous menu.

I tried unplugging the wired interface and enabling the wireless but with no effect.

At this point it's working fine - knock on wood - so I consider the case closed. Until the next time.

I have the same problem. Only thing that works is if I reboot my computer. What a pain every time I need to print something.

Janra01,

The connection problem can vary on how you're connecting the printer, virus program and firewall. I have the same problem as (Which person) does not say much.

If wireless, try using these Recommended Wireless Router Settings in your wireless router, I use channel 11. I would make a new SSID to make connecting easier.

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print job from the queue.

Start, control panel, programs and features(add/remove programs) Dell V715w Printer, uninstall.

Restart your computer.

Make sure the printer was removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

With the computer online, insert the Dell V715w Printer disk and choose new installation. If using network, choose network and follow the instructions. If usb, install the drivers. You'll get a message the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on)

Remember virus programs and firewalls will block communications.

Also try these tweaks...

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)

Go to the USB Controller section and click the + sign.

Go to each USB Root Hub and right click on it, left click properties, left click power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Restart your computer.

--------------------------------------

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager). Click on Network and then right click on your wireless adapter, left click properties, power management. Uncheck the box, allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

I found a solution - finally!

The printhead on my 715 clogged - again! did I mention that issue? no? - for the last time. Couldn't get it clean this time, so I recycled the cartridges for $4 credit with Staples and recycled the printer with an electronics recycler.

In its place I bought an HP 8600 Pro Plus at Costco for $199 and it works like a charm. Liked it so much I got my wife one for her office and recommended it to a friend whose older HP finally died and she loves it as well.

Just my 2 cents, but I think Dell rebadged a Lexmark that wasn't up to scratch to fill a hole in their home printer line. They must have at least tweaked the printhead and the parts of the software that dealt with the printhead/ink supply, because they were definitely Dell cartridges. I don't think those were rebadged Lexmark cartridges.

Anyhow, previous Dell printers I owned seem to have been built by Dell and I was always very pleased. The 715 was a lemon.

Again, just my opinion.

But I'm sooooooo glad to be rid of it!

This printer made for excellent batting practice in my back yard. What worthless device.
