Please follow the instructions below and then tell me what happens.

First, let's make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially .net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.

Disconnect your printer.

Download and run this patch to completely remove the printer from your computer. Run the patch, a MUST on Vista machines, until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer.

Download the proper drivers.

XP Drivers

Vista 32-bit Drivers

Vista 64-bit Drivers.

All other drivers

Install the proper drivers.(ONLY install the drivers you need) You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on)

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Scanning

Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.

Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

I'm not on my home computer right now, so I have to look harder for some of these items.

As for faxing, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the Fax Folder. In the Fax Folder, right click on setup.exe and left click run as administrator. This will install the Fax program.

Ok.. I did the above patch and driver installation. During the printer reinstillation it says the file 'dlcccnv4.dll' on Dell is needed. Under that it says copy files from C:/Program Files/DellPhotoAIOPrinter924//Drivers  and it will not let you use this file. When you press ok, it keeps displaying the same message. Eventually it did install but a message popped up that said may not be installed correctly and that no fax application is found.

Also regarding fax, I tried  your above suggestion and when I go to the fax folder, to right click on setup.exe, there is no such option. 

I failed to mention that we also installed Windows 2007/One Note  on this computer....should that affect anything?

Sounds like something didn't go quite right. Disconnect the printer and run the patch again until it prompts you to restart your computer. Afte you restart your computer, do this to make sure all traces of the printer are gone. Manual Printer Driver Removal Also right clcik start, left click explore and navigate to the Program Files folder and click on it. Look for your Dell Printer folder. If it's there, then delete it.

Restart your computer. Install the proper driver that you downloaded from Dell website. When the file unzips, sometimes it just sits there. Look for the setup.exe file in this folder and right click on it, left click run as administrator.

On your printer disk, there should be some type of Fax folder with the installation program on it. If your computer does not have a modem, then it might be possible the fax software will not install(as in my case). If you cannot install the fax program from the disk, then I suggest you try using BVRP PhoneTools for Faxing To the best of my knowledge, it's FREE.

One Note might be an issue but I'm not trying to look at that as most of the time, this procedure to install the printer has worked. The few times it didn't work was with an infected system. If there is an issue, we could try a simple XP Operating system repair. If you decide this route, first, you will not lose any files and folders doing this on a Dell computer.(I always stress to people to always make copies of files and folders that you cannot afford to lose). Disconnect the printer, then run the patch and wait for the restart to insert the operating system disk.

Insert the operating system disk and restart your computer.

Press any key to boot from CD.

Choose install.

Do the agreement.

Now choose repair. Leave the disk in until you see the Welcome Screen. Takes about 35 minutes. You'll have to get all the Windows Updates, again(more painful)

OK... ran the patch again. Did the Manual Printer driver removal, there is an installed printer driver that I cannot remove.  It says" send to Microsoft One note driver". I choose the remove option and it says "unable to remove send to microsoft one note driver, Intel, Windows 2000 or XP driver. The specified printer driver is currently in use". ( All applications were closed).  If there is an issue with the One Note, can I remove it, as we rarely use this program... Will that solve anything?

I cannot tell you about One Note. As long as you have the printer drivers removed, that will help. What type of Virus protection and firewalls are you using? I have seen both block installations of printers before, espically McAfee and Norton. A few security suites and some firewalls.

Just looked at another computer on my network. One Note is installed on her computer and has no effect with the printer installing.

I have AVG Free 8.5 as virus scan.

 I redid every thng and the scanning now works!!! Thank you....

I did find out why the fax capability is not working.. for some reason when they reinstalled the XP Professional, I am missing the file for MS fax services ( I dont have my system, restoration disc, I dont think I ever got one) .... I  am going to try the free fax service you suggested to see if that works.
