Blue lines on A940 prints
I am getting horizontal blue lines on the prints from my A940. Plain black text is OK, but anytime there is color or a graphic, I get the blue lines. Tech support can't seem to help. I have detailed below the steps I have tried.
1. Cleaned and aligned the nozzles.
2. Deleted the printer from my PC and then reinstalled it.
3. Downloaded the latest driver from the Dell website and installed it. It looked the same version (1.0.0.0), just a newer date (07/02/01 vs 04/02/03).
4. Used XP System Restore to roll back my system three months.
5. Hooked up a replacement printer I received from Dell.
6. Rebricked the power supply.
7. Restored the printer quality settings to the factory default.
After all of this, I still get horizontal blue lines in my prints. The only change has been a reduction in the number of blue lines in the Windows Printer Test Page. The Windows logo now has 3 lines instead of 11.

I have a question for you, If i understand correctly they sent out a new printer? if this is understood, did you get new ink cartridges? If you havent do that and see what happens. If not there may be a bad batch of printers.

I have the exact same issue with my A940. My cartridges are still pretty new too. They definitely have plenty of blue ink still (to make those wonderful blue lines). Cleaning doesn't do anything but waste more ink.
Has anyone else found a solution for this? I would rather fix it than exchange for another one only to find it wasn't the printer that was the problem after all.

After trying to reinstall drivers, try and get new cartridges sent out. From the way it sounds there may be some bad cartridges out there. I dont know much else it can be.

Your welcome, this seems rare though so I dont think it could be a software issue. I think the cartridges may be part of a bad batch.

Thanks Ryan, I'll probably do that unless I find another solution before then. Either way, I'll post the solution that fixes it.

It could be a bad cartridge, but it is strange that mine worked fine for 10 months. I purchased my A940 in April 2003 and used it sparingly. I had 3/4 color and 1/2 black remaining in February 2004 when the blue lines appeared.
The replacement printer I received last month did not contain new cartridges. After spending nearly 1 hour on the telephone, Dell decided to send me replacement cartridges that will be filled 2/3 full (the cartridge level on the printer display). They originally only wanted to send me a color cartridge. I insisted that they send a color and black cartridge because of the repeated cleanings and alignments I performed at tech support's request. I wouldn't have wasted so much ink if Dell had recognized the blue lines as a defective cartridge from the start.
I will post again once I receive the replacement cartridges. I hope they work. If not, I will have a mad scramble trying to get my money back. My warranty expires 04/18.

I received and installed the color and black cartridges today. Guess what? No more blue lines!! I find it strange that the color cartridge went bad after nearly 10 months of use, but I am glad my printer works again.
I did not try your suggestion, but I will keep it in mind if/when my A940 acts up after my warranty expires next month.
Thanks.
