Cannot transfer photos from camera onto computer...HELP!
I have a Windows XP (XPS 400). Printer is a Photo 964.
I have been having problems transferring photos/video from my camera to my computer. I used to always put my memory card into the SD/MMC slot on my printer. I've had my computer for about 3 1/2 years and never had any problems with transferring photos. But about a month or 2 ago I started having problems. Considering that didn't work, instead of inserting the memory card, I would hook up the USB cable that came with my Nikon COOLPIX L3 camera, and hooked it up to the PictBridge on the printer. The computer would pick up the pictures, but every time I would click on Next, everything would freeze up and the pictures would not successfully transfer onto the computer. So I eventually had to hook the camera USB cable to the slot on the computer tower, which did work for awhile. But now, I'm back to the same problem, where the pictures do not successfully transfer and my computer freezes up.
I also have problems scanning things. The Dell-All-In-One Center freezes every time I use it. I also sometimes have problems viewing my photos. I'll open up a file that has photos that I had taken from a specific event, and would sometimes take awhile to open. I've noticed I have had all of these problems, since I had to download an Anti-virus tool from Norton. I have dial-up, and so the virus protection wasn't 100% working, so I contacted them thru the online chat, and they gave me a link to a tool I had to download. Ever since I downloaded it, that is when I noticed the problems transferring photos. Any help would be much appreciated!

LLR88,
Norton is a resource hog and may be the culprit. I'd try re-installing the printer and see what happens.
First, let's make sure your computer has the latest Windows Updates, especially.net framework, needed to run many applications and the latest Java.
Disconnect your printer.
Un-install the printer.
Restart your computer.
Download the proper drivers.
XP Drivers
Vista 32-bit Drivers
All other drivers
Vista 64-bit Drivers
Install the proper drivers. You'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on) Please use a 5ft USB Cable or smaller.
Please remember to install the latest firmware for the 964 printer.
As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.
Scanning
Scanning using USB connection, open the Dell All-In-One Center, click on scanning and copying and scan from there.
Scanning wirelessly, use the scan buttons on the printer.

LLR88,
Since this worked before, did you try using System Restore and go back to when it worked?
The .net framework and the Java need to be downloaded. The drivers, since you're using XP, you can use the printers disk. I feel your pain with dialup. Cheap DSL is much better than dialup and faster, too. :emotion-5:
After you have the .net framework and Java installed and restart your computer, then disconnect the printer. Un-install the printer in the control panel, add/remove programs. Restart your computer. Insert the 964 printer disk and choose install. Follow the instructions and you'll be prompted when to connect your printer(powered on) If the printer does not install for you, the try a different USB port, since you have a desktop.
Another thing to try is to un-install the CoolPix software as I read in some other posts that some camera software does interfere with different items.
If you recently re-installed the operating system, please let me know this as the drivers might not have been installed correctly.

Is there any other way to fix this problem? I have REALLY SLOW dial-up (looking into other internet options, but it's hard when many don't provide service where I live.) I already had Java installed on my computer, but it took hours to download .net framework. For the past couple of days, I have downloaded the links you provided, but haven't gotten very far. With how slow it's downloading, I figured it may take AT LEAST 2 weeks to download everything. So is there absolutely any other option to fix the problem with my printer? Your help is greatly appreciated!

It didn't work. :( I had tried the System Restore the other day, tried to restore it on different dates prior to when I had contacted Norton, but that didn't work. I also had followed the instructions that came with my computer/printer about unplugging the printer, uninstalling, and reinstalling it with the disk. But nothing has worked. When following your instructions, while I was reinstalling the printer, it said there was an error and that it may not work properly. I can open the Dell-All-In-One Center and it does scan, but I cannot view what I just scanned. Every time I go to my pictures folder, everything freezes up.

LLR88,
I would try a system repair of my operating system.
Insert the operating system disk and restart your computer.
Press any key to boot from CD.
Choose install
Do the agreement.
Now choose repair. Leave the operating system disk in the computer until you see the Welcome Screen. Takes about 35 minutes. Now you'll have to get the Windows Updates, again.

If I do this, will it wipe out everything I have saved on my computer (programs, pictures, documents)? I have most of my stuff saved on a disk, but I just want to make sure before I do it. Hopefully THIS will work. Your help is greatly appreciated!

LLR88,
You have a Dell computer. Your files and folders should stay intact, but we stress this just in case.
Remember to get the Windows Updates, again.

LLR88,
You are using a Desktop. Did you try a different USB Port?
The USB Cable you're using, is it 5ft or smaller?
What is the printer doing or not doing?
