gsmartinf,

Are you using Dell Series 2 ink cartridges? Did you try to refill these cartridges?

Unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick from the back of the printer. Wait 60 seconds, then plug everything back in. This will reset any error messages the printer has in memory.

Turn the power on. Open the printer and take out the Dell Series 2 black ink cartridge and reseat it. Do the same for the Dell Series 2 color ink cartridge.

Close the printer and it will try to print an alignment page. Any error messages?

Dell Series 2 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges

Dell Series 2 ink cartridges can only be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's website.

Black cartridge = black(left side)          Color cartridge = Color side(right side)

Photo Cartridge = Black(left side)        Color cartridge = color side.

It's possible to get a Dell Series 2 ink cartridge with a bad sensor. I would that these back to the place of purchase for a replacement or a refund.

Hi Rick,

I followed your instructions, first, I used a new cartridge series 2, it was bought on Dell by mail , when I   turned the power on the printer show the message " Black in low", then I tried to print a document and the printer shows the message "cartridge error : error 50C consult user guide" and the screen shows "cartridge problem, the current print job has been canceled....", then I again tested with a refilled Dell ink cartridge and the result was the same. do you think both cartridges have bad sensor? or may be the printer broke? any other suggestion?

Thank you

gsmartinf,

It sounds like a bad sensor in the cartridge. Contact Dell for a replacement.

Very disingenuous on part of HP. They don't tell you which cartridge is misaligned. I had to replace both to get it to work. I guess more money to spend on special consultants!

I have the exact same problem -- nothing is working. have installed 2 BRAND-NEW cartridges ($70+) and can't print. I took out the brick and waited and reinstalled the cartridges several times -- i realize this post was ages ago but just in case someone reads this...did you have to buy new cartridges and did that solve the problem? if not, what was the problem? THANK YOU!!

Hi there -- did you ever solve this problem? I'm having the EXACT same issue with the cartridge error message. Not sure you'll see this since your post was so long ago but I want to know if I'm going to have to get a new printer! Ugh!

renaspar,

Are you using Dell Series 2 ink cartridges? This error, 50c, usually comes from refilling the ink cartridges.

OH NO! i spoke too soon. it printed out ONE page and now i'm getting the same ol' 50c error message again!!!! with the new (second new) black cartridge.

i really don't get it. could it be that the printer is the problem after all and not the cartridges? if so, is there anything i can do?

bummed in boston!

Rick, thanks so much for your reply (got them both)! I returned both the new cartridges to Staples -- they resisted refunding me because the packages were open but I convinced them the cartridges were defective (which they were). In the meantime, I had reinstalled the OLD cartridges, and everything went back to normal. Go figure! Now I have a NEW black cartridge and the old color cartridge and all seems to be working. I'll wait to install the new color cartridge till the ink is low.

I have learned from past experience not to refill these Dell cartridges, because they don't work well, OR they fail the test at Walgreens, etc.

I'm just glad I don't have to buy a new printer! If anybody else has these problems, I hope you can return them to the store. I cited this forum as evidence of the problem!

Best,

Ren

ren,

Take the cartridges out and look where the contact are inside where the cartridges sit. There may be a buildup of ink, or something. Carefully clean the inside with a lint-free cloth, like a coffee filter.

Unplug the printer from the wall. Remove the power brick for 60 seconds. This will reset any error messages the printer is getting.

rick, you're very kind to be so responsive. SOOOOOO, fingers crossed knock wood and all that, i took the brick out, cleaned the contact points (which looked sparkling clean but i did it anyway)...kept in the old cartridges and got the error message. then i replaced the old with the NEW cartridges (the second round) and... so far so good... i printed out 12 pages so far and no error messages!! i really hope this solves the problem. i'm counting my pennies these days and can't afford a new printer.

thank you SO much! i hope i won't have to come back to the forum, and i mean that in the best way. :)
