Dell 1600n Printer - Toner Smears on Left Side
I have had a Dell 1600n MultiFunction Laser printer for about 5 years. The toner has started to smear on one location along the Left side and runs the whole length of the paper. When the page prints out, the lettering looks fine but when you touch it the toner smears.
I printed out a whole black-color page and rubbed the whole page with a cloth to try and isolate the smearing.

I have tried cleaning the drum dozens of times and even changed the toner cartridge to 3 new ones (all true dell products) and received the same results.
I've opened the panel and tried to clean the inside of the printer as best I can without taking any screws off and dismantling it, yet nothing works.
Any ideas?

Eric,
It sounds to me like your fuser is defective.
The fuser is the device that, combining heat (~350degrees) and pressure, affixes the toner to the paper. The heat in these is very well monitored so I would be more suspicious of a problem with either (or both) the heat or pressure roller inside the fuser.
If you open the rear door and remove the 4 screws that attach the fuser, it removes fairly easily. There are two big rollers that extend all the way across inside the fuser frame, One is hollow and carries the heat lamp thru the center. It's usually a hard, Teflon coated tube. The other roller is the pressure roller and is usually a hard rubber coated with a non-stick surface. If either of thee rollers has any surface abrasions, scrapes, gouges, etc, this is probably the symptom you will see.

Thanks Llynster.
That worked like a charm. The hard roller had toner caked on it where I was getting the smears. I cleaned it all off and put everything back together and no more smudging.
