Dell 3100CN - can't add networked printer

Hi - wonder if anyone can help on this one please. Dell 3100CN printer connected to LAN, NIC is active, and I can call up the printer interface tool (or whatever it's called) by entering the printer IP address into IE. I have run the installation CD, selected network install, and the installation terminates normally. The printer status seems good, and I can print to it using ftp. What I can't do is add it as a networked printer on XP. When I go through the 'add printer' foreplay, the PC simply fails to see the printer even if I enter the (DHCP allocated) IP address.
I have downloaded and installed the latest fw upgrades for the printer, but no joy.
I'd be grateful for any clues folks. I did look through 12 pages of this forum, but ran out of time,

Thanks,

2 ways to install it.  forst off, use the wizard off the install disk. second, use the add printer wizard, but instead of choosing network printer, choose local printer, and uncheck the automatically search box. and then create a new port (standard tcp/ip port) and use the printers ip address.

did you install the printer for local or remote access under the network option?
Also did you check the printer IP address through the printer menu. In order to network through different workstations, they all have to be on the same workgroup (mshome or workgroup for example). Otherwise the network won't see the printer.

Hope this helps

Many thanks for the help folks. I removed then re-installed the printer using the XP Add Printer wizard, and created a standard TCP/IP port as suggested. This worked fine - until I came to add this same printer to a different workstation. The printer installed OK, but when accessing the printer properties, it didn't pop up the Dell gui which gives you the configuration options (not the status one). The only way I could persuade this to come up was by installing the Dell software from the CD onto this second PC. It insisted on calling the printer by a meaningless name (summat like a Dell 2924), which I was able to rename luckily. Bit of a run around for summat as simple as adding a printer though!
But thanks again for your help.
