Dell 966 Printer upgraded system
Rick,
I hope that you will be able to assist me in my 48 hour issue. I have been trying to troubleshoot my 'Enable Bidirectional Communication" problem with my Dell Photo All In One 966 printer. I have upgraded my OS from Windows Home to Windows Ultimate. (Both 64 bit). Previously I did have the printer working, however it is not working now. I have attempted to put my computer on a home network using windows server 2008. I have added it to the domain, and purchased a new wirless/network adapter for the printer so I would be able to connect it to the network, but it isnt quite working. So I pulled out the adapter and still have the issue of Enable Bidirectional Communication. Every time I go to the printer tab, ports, it is grayed out and I am unable to get the printer working. Everything else other than the print function is operating correctly. I just can't get the printer to work.
I have attempted to uninstall, reinstall, downloaded the drivers fromt the dell website probably about 15 different times. I have attempted to install the printer on using the network cat 5 cable, wirelessly, and usb (with and without adapter installed). Each time with an initial install of the software.
I have been all over the internet and I have tried everything that I can possibly do. I have attempted to look in the registry and fix the issue. What is really crazy, is that since I bought the wireless adapter, I have not been able to get 'ANY' of the computers at home to print.
Please help me.

I am aware of the Delete print jobs from previous posts and have completed these. I have ran it again, one thing that I noticed, was that it was a 32 bit software program.
I again did the manual printer driver removal as listed above. **Nothing was there to delete.
I have downloaded the patch and drivers (again) and tried to install. Still says to enable bidirectional communication. I am at a total loss...
Another thing that I have noticed, in the C:Program files... When it normally shows:
C: Program Files
C: Program Files (x86)
I have another that is C: Program Filres (x86) (x86)
The only thing in the 3rd is the dell aio printer, however it does not have all the information. I attemped to 'remove' the data, but the uninstall (When the software is installed) it shows that the UNINST.EXE is in the C:Program Files (x86).
I am unable to delete this from my computer due to a file being installed on login. I even attempted to boot into safemode but for some reason I am unable to login to safemode. It is as if I do not have this option to go into safemode with Ulitmate (or atleast my own computer for some reason. Any suggestions on this one?
The other computers in the house that have the same issue of C: Program Files (x86) (x86).
Any idea how to get rid of this or correct this? Again, the ONLY thing that is in the C: Program Files (x86) (x86) is "Dell Photo AIO Printer 966"

I finally got my computer to work with my printer. the actual reason, which I do not understand is as follow:
When you go into the C: Program files, you will have two options.
Program Files - for 64 bit programs.
Program Files (x86) - for 32 bit programs.
For what ever reason, I found that I had an issue with it producing C:Program Files (x86) (x86).
The only thing that was in that file was the: Dell 966 AIO Printer. Everytime I tried to delete it, it would state that there is a file that is being used. So I had to log in under safe mode. Once I finished that, I was able to delete it.
YOU MUST USE ADMINISTRATOR ACCOUNT : to delete this folder.
Restarted the computer. Ensured that all the printer drivers and software were deleted. Reinstalled the software, and poof. Then the enable bidirectional communication was checkable.
Long story short, check to see if you see: C:PROGRAM FILES (x86) (x86).
If you have that, then you bidirectional will not work. It is trying to use some files from one folder and then some from another that are not in the correct location. There fore a regular uninstall will not work. The uninstall file is actually in the C:Program Files (x86) and then those drivers are deleted and not some of the ones in use in the C:Program Files (x86)(x86).
I would like to thank you Rick for the time that you assisted me. Your response time was FAST. This is actually the only time that I have ever posted on a blog to attempt to help me with any issues and I truly thank you for your prompt troubleshooting tips and skills. You are a great person and wanted to ensure I posted my findings and thank you for your help with this!
Thank you very much!

jjcabral,
Glad you got it working! :emotion-21: Thanks for posting back.
You found me at a good time, I work every other weekend and the last Monday of the month, I have a labeling job aqnd disappear for a day to recoup on the much needed sleep. Bidirectional Support will also be greyed out, sometimes if the generic drivers are installed.
Take care,
Rick
