Dell color laser printer 1355cn newly installed Magenta cartridge still shows empty

I have a Dell 1355cn color laser printer.  The printer indicated the Magenta toner cartridge needed to be replaced.  I ordered a new Dell Magenta toner cartridge and a new Dell Yellow toner cartridge at the same time and received them this week.  I installed the new Magenta toner cartridge and the printer indicated that not only was the new Magenta cartridge still empty but the old Yellow toner cartridge was now empty.  I installed a new Yellow cartridge and the new Yellow cartridge was then shown as full but the new Magenta cartridge was still shown as empty.  I have removed and reinstalled the new Magenta cartridge several times but the printer still shows the new Magenta cartridge as being empty.  What can I do?  Can the new magenta cartridge be faulty?
