It never occurred to me that the problem with my DVD drive could have been caused by updates to Vista.   It stopped working more than 3 years ago (within the warranty period, I think).  Actually it's possible it never worked because I can't remember ever using the drive -- my OS and software were installed by Dell.  

The computer recognizes the drive, but it doesn't recognize a disc in the drive.  When I put a disc in the drive, nothing happens.  When I go Computer > DVD drive and click on it, it ejects the disc and tells me to insert a disc.    Does this sound like a software problem?   I'm reluctant to proceed with the MS "fix it" program unless I think there is a chance it might fix the DVD drive.   I try to run as few applications as possible because new apps often mess up other things.  But it would be great to have a working DVD drive.

Thanks Nikhil,  My computer gave me a warning that the publisher of OCR.zip is unidentifed, but I downloaded it anyway.  I extracted the files and identified two applications.  There may be more but I haven't figured out how to get Vista to display file extensions, so the exe files are not identifiable  at a glance (to me, anyway):

1. OCR/Abbyy /instmsiw

2.OCR/Abbyy/Setup

When I click on instmsiw, I get an error which reads "Wrong OS or OS version for application".  A Program Compatibility Assistant dialog box then appeared offering to "Reinstall this program using recommended settings"

Should I do that, or should I run the setup program?  I don't want to run or install any more programs than necessary.

Hi Sheila,

Please try to install the OCR software in compatible mode and check.

If the program does not install, the only option to install the program is to download it from the Printers driver disc that was shipped with the printer.

As the system is unable to read the disc, I suggest you to delete the upper and lower filters by following the below mentioned steps:

 1. Click “Start”, and then click “All Programs”.
2. Click “Accessories”, and then click “Run”.
3. Type “regedit”, and then click “OK”. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click “Allow”.
4. In the navigation pane, locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5. In the right pane, click “UpperFilters”.
Note: You may also see an “UpperFilters.bak” registry entry. You do not have to remove that entry. Click “UpperFilters” only. If you do not see the “UpperFilters” registry entry, you still might have to remove the “LowerFilters” registry entry. To do this, go to step 8.
6. On the Edit menu, click “Delete”.
7. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click “Yes”.
8. In the right pane, click “LowerFilters”.
Note: If you do not see the “LowerFilters” registry entry, unfortunately this content cannot help you any further. Go to the "Next Steps" section for information about how you can find more solutions or more help on the Microsoft Web site.
9. On the Edit menu, click “Delete”.
10. When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click “Yes”.
11. Exit Registry Editor.
12. Restart the computer.

Check if the optical drive is reading the printer’s driver disc and download the software.

Thank you Nikhil.  So I should proceed with instmsiw , not setup?  I guess the setup program is for after the install?  (Pardon my ignorance, please.)

Regarding the "upper and lower filters" I would like to do this in either event if it might fix the CD drive.  I have a question about the registry instructions.  If I am able to delete the "upper filters'" entry should I also delete the lower filters?  Or do I look for the lower filters only if the upper filters are not present?     I'm nervous about editing the registry.  Is it reversable if I make a mistake?   Thank you!  --Sheila

You can follow DELL-Nikhil D's information , which is correct or the Microsoft Fit it will do this for you. You then have to restart the computer.

The problem with using a third party OCR is that sometimes it will not work with the printer. I have a solution for the OCR Program, but need to be contected privately. If you CLICK HERE, on the next page, start conversation with, we can discuss the OCR Program solution there.

I removed the "upperfilters" and "lowerfilters" entries in the registry, and the DVD drive is still not working.   I've decided that I would prefer to fix or replace the drive and install the printer software from the CD.  Can you help me diagnose ore replace the DVD drive?

When I go to the control panel and click on the DVD drive, the computer says that the device is working properly.  When I put a CD in the drive, nothing happens.   When I go to "Computer" and  click on the DVD drive, it says "Please insert a disc in drive E", and ejects the disc.  I've tried it with various discs and none of them are recognized by the computer.

Is there anything else I can do to try to fix it?   If not, what specs should I look for in new DVD drive?   According to the device manager, the drive I have is ATA, and it seems that new drives tend to be SATA. Would a SATA drive be incompatible?   I'd like to use the DVD drive for backing up my data, so I'm guessing that an internal drive would be faster for this purpose.  Am I wrong about that?

I have a dell v305 all-in-one printer. I do not have the printer disk but I have the imaging toolbox program installed on my computer. When I try to scan a document, dialog box appears that says I need to install an OCR program. It prints and copies fine. It just would not scan. Can you please help me?
