E521 will not boot when HP C6180 is connected

Question

E521 will not boot when HP printer C6180 is turned on. If printer is turned off, E521 will boot correctly. Printer can be turned on and works after computer boots up. I followed the instructions to modify the BIOS to 'NO BOOT' for external USB connected devices. Obviously, the work around of booting first works, but is there a fix for this?

The fix is to set the USB for no boot.  Did you save the BIOS configuration after you did that?

I rechecked the BIOS settings for USB and it was set to 'no boot'. I also made sure to save the setting. To test the setting, I've been turning off the computer and allowing 15 to 20 seconds before turning on (with the printer already turned on). The boot works about half the time.....locking up the other half.

Try a different USB port.  On some Dell models certain USB ports are active at boot up (for the keyboard and mouse) and others aren't.    The no boot is the definite fix and others have reported it works when they change to no boot, even with HP devices.  If it doesn't work with yours there would seem to be a hardware problem in the PC.

Thanks for your help. I did try the remaining three USB positions. I found one position that seems to work. I tested 5 times and it failed once. That could have been a user problem. Thanks again.
