How do I force the 922 to do a print head alignment when in stand alone mode?

Try this:
1. Open the printer lid, the ink carriage will automatically move into position so you can access the ink cartridges.
2. Flip the two lids for the ink cartridges and then close them.
3. Close the printer lid.
4. You should now be presented with a message on the LCD of the 922 "Press 'Menu' to print an automatic alignment page".
5. Press the 'menu' button. An aligment page will now be printed.
Hope this helps!

Thanks for suggestion. Unfortunately on my printer your suggestion does not force a print head alignment.

Try this then:
1. Open the printer lid, the ink carriage will automatically move into position so you can access the ink cartridges.
2. Flip the two lids for the ink cartridges and actually remove and reinsert the cartridges. Now close the lids.
3. Close the printer lid.
4. You should now be presented with a message on the LCD of the 922 "Press 'Menu' to print an automatic alignment page".
5. Press the 'menu' button. An aligment page will now be printed.
This will work for you, I just did it twice on a 922! ;)

Unfortunately no go......
Given it is a no go, the following info looks like it may be relevant & hopefully there is a way around the sitution to easily force a print head alignment.
The reason I want to force a print head alignment is that it clears the dreaded "incorrect cartridge" issue EVERYTIME. I print a lot of double sided and get somewhat regular paper jams. The paper jam more often than not causes one or other cartridge to go into "incorrect cartridge" mode. I have read the many threads on "incorrect cartridge" and the recommendations to swap cartridge or printer but that would involve weekly printer &/or cartridge swaps.
In this situation the 2 suggestions you make above unfortunately do not lead to a print head alignment. Either the printer continues as if nothing has happened or it reports "incorrect cartridge".
This leads me back to my original question of how to force a print head alignment, as the only way I could consistently force one was to do the old trick of confusing the printer by placing a new catridge into the printer and before doing the alignment putting the old cartridge back in & then doing the alignment. This is ok but takes time & is tricky as the carriage will think it is jammed if not careful & then i have to go thru the whole thing again.
I was hoping that there may be a hold "SCAN plus +" menu option but no such luck.
Any other thorts are welcome.

If removing the carts isn't prompting you for an alignment page, then you've definitely got something out of the ordinary going on with your 922 and/or ink cartridges. I've done this method twice on two different 922 printers, and it worked just fine. However, hearing that you have the dreaded 'cartridge incorrect' error, I would put the blame on the carts. This is a rather common issue with these cartridges. You might have a couple that are right on the fringe of not working; hence you are able to nurse them back to functioning state (with adding/removing them and so forth). You might look into contacting Dell for replacements, you shouldn't be expected to have to print an alignment page for the reasons you are having to anyway!
