Laser Printer 1710 on parallel Port : how to set the Bidirectional mode ?

Hello everybody.
 
I just purchased and installed a model 1710 printer, which is connected via the parallel interface of my PC.
It seems that I need to install the Bidirectional feature, because the PC sees the printer as being off line and the utility cannot measure the level of toner.
The documentation indicates that this Bidi support is located on the CD Rom provided by Dell.
 
could someone tell me where to get the file on the CD Rom and how to install the Bidi feature ?
 
One other point, if I may.
I tried to connect the printer thru a USB Connection. The printer works but the application I print from (Word, Excel, whatever) hungs until the actual printing is about to start (i.e. when the "level of toner" box is displayed). It looks as if there was no spooler, although the spooler option is selected in the printer's properties.
 
Is this normal behavior or do I miss something ? Anyone ?

To enable bidirectional communications between your computer and printer you need to set your parallel port configuration to EPP (Enhanced Parallel Port) or ECP (Extended Capabilities Port).  This is usually done through the setup utility on your computer, which can be accessed by pressing a certain key to interrupt the boot process when your computer is starting up.
 
Go to the parallel port section in the setup utility and change the setting.  You may also have to purchase a special parallel port cable which is IEEE-1284 compliant (older parallel port cables may not support bidirectional fuctionality).
