Photo 964 AIO stops printing abruptly

Someone recently gave me a seldom-used Dell Photo 964.  They didn't have the installation CD anymore, so I went online and downloaded drivers and firmware.  At first everything seemed to be fine, but then I went to print 5-page document and after the second page the printer just quit.  There were no error messages or anything, just nothing happened for a very very long time.  I then found I could not remove the document from the print queue until after restarting my computer.

As that problem became more common, I decided to try removing and re-installing the drivers and firmware, which I did today based on instructions from elsewhere on this forum.  No such luck; the same problem popped back up immediately.

In my endless searches for solutions, it seems that it could be a spooling problem, but I see no way to fix it as restarting the print spooler does not change a thing.

Any suggestions?  My OS is Windows Vista.  I realize I may not be providing all the information you smarter folk need for troubleshooting, but please bear with me and ask questions...

Beryllium,

Vista 32-bit or 64-bit?

What virus program and firewall are you using?

Did you install new Dell Series 5 ink cartridges? Can you copy a document under the glass? Black and white and color?

Try running Delete Print Jobs to remove stuck print job(s) from the queue, then restart the computer.

Vista 32-bit.  I use AVG Free Edition and the Windows Firewall that came with my computer.

I am operating it with only a black ink cartridge - there is an empty color one in there that I never replaced.  In retrospect, maybe that is confusing the system, though at first it seemed like it didn't mind printing with just the black.  But it is Dell Series 5; I haven't replaced the cartridge since the one that I installed when I first got the printer.

Copying works fine.  Haven't tried it in color, obviously.

Running Delete Print Jobs didn't help.

Beryllium,

The printer needs to be able to read the sensors in both the Dell Series 5 ink cartridges. Copying indicates that the printer does function. If the printer would not function, then I would try a Dell Color Series 5 ink cartridge. You can always adjust the printers preferences to print in black only.

AVG has been known to block communications. Try...

Allow Wireless Printer Blocked by AVG 8.0 Firewall

If that does not work, then I would try uninstalling AVG, restart the computer and see if the printer communicates.

If running delete print jobs didn't work, then there are probably not any print jobs in the queue.

My version of AVG didn't include a Firewall... However, I tried uninstalling AVG entirely and it appears that may have done the trick.  (It's hard to say for sure as it was originally not a consistent problem, so the fact that I've printed a few things successfully doesn't mean it's necessarily fixed for good... However, it's definitely better than it was when I started this thread.)

So, if the fix stays fixed, would you suggest trying reinstalling AVG and see if it works better that time around?  Or is it likely to keep mucking things up, and I should try a different free AntiVirus instead?

Beryllium,

Try reinstalling AVG. Also read...

If problems return, then uninstall AVG and try a different virus protection.
