Problem with Dell 964 and XPS600

Just bought a brand new XPS600 and a Dell All-In-One Photo 964 Printer in January 2006.  After installing the printer (per instructions provided), receive the following RUNDLL error message at startup:

C:\WINDOWS\System32|spool\DRIVERS\W32X86\3\DLCJtime.dll
Missing Entry:RunDLLEntry

This causes the computer to randomly hang during the WindowsXP Media Center Edition startup.  I have already had to re-format the hard drive (the day after receiving the NEW computer from Dell).  I contacted Dell Customer Support (printers), downloaded the latest printer drivers from the Dell web site, and still get the same error and symptoms.  Dell customer support first blamed the problem on Microsoft (claimed a "known" problem with print spooler), then suggested I send the printer back to Dell and try a new one.  They also claim no one else has reported the same problem. PLEASE HELP!

I really want to use the with my new system, but I am nearing the end of my patience with this issue.

Sorry to hear about your plight.

I too found out the hard way about the lack of compatible drivers with the AIO 964 and the XPS 600.  The solutions you have found work (delete DLCJcats value and using Startup Inspector - great program).

However, in XP pro, if an alternate account (or user) uses the printer, that .dll error wants to creep back in.  You just have to tell startup inspector to shut it down again.

I am sure there has been enough response about these printer drivers that Dell is working on a patch.  (Don't let them tell you it is a Windows thing...HP/Lexmark printers load and work fine on my system)  The good news is that the error .dll does not cause any adverse effects.  ( I have not had a BSOD...knock on wood)  But as said earlier, when you lay down a big chunk of coin for a new CPU, you need not be closing an error message because of a $200 printer.

I hope this and earlier posts help.

Glad to hear it's not just my pc.  This temporary fix didn't work for me.  The error comes back as soon as I print something and reboot.  No BSOD here.  And yes my HP printer works fine.  It is a problem with the 964 not windows

The problem is that when you print something the DLCJCATS is some how restarted. I found this out because spysweeper ask if I wanted to keep the new chang. This is not right DELL has to fix this problem NOW!!!!. When you buy top of the line you expect it to work! Computers are not fool proof but DELL had better start researching and testing their computer before thy sell them. I did not spend big dollars to be the tester.

This from another post on the same issue:

well... I did talk to Dell Tech support and the experience was actually good in terms of waiting time and efficiency from Dell side..., the fellow even went to the Community Forum and had a look to our well documented issue and where we are standing as of now

however, as far as the tech representative I taked to the bottom line is:

1. they are aware of the issue

2. they will NOT support and/or help editing the registry

3. they suggest to reinstall all the printer drivers AND/or operating system...

4. suggested to get in touch with the printes people to file a case on this issue

Bottom line, this is a dead end... the ONLY thing I will suggest trying is to get a DIFFERENT printer...

I disagree with the issue being a dead-end.

The current XPS 600 and the new AIO 964 have not been on the market for very long and obviously the two don't co-exist very well.  The driver application with the 964 is the issue and that code can be easily updated.

Even though the moderators at the site say that Dell does not monitor these forums, the company would be foolish not to take note of a recurring problem and look into a solution.

As far as calling tech support, many of the tele-techs that you will talk to only know what is written on the cue card for troubleshooting.  I have uninstalled/reloaded the print drivers 5 times, I have manually stopped and started the print spooler, I have also reinstalled the OS.  The problem only occurs when the 964 is loaded...it is that simple.

I put my faith and patience in Dell that they will have an updated driver within a month.  Call me naive.

After one month, I can say I like the XPS 600 and would buy it again if I had to do it over.  But I would pass on the AIO 964 printer option and get a HP.

As always, I thank you for the time and am appreitiative of the knowledge posted on these forums.

Hey,

I have a question, I have the 964 as well on my XPS Gen 2 and noticed a file in services called dlcj_device, has anyone tried to turn this off yet?

I wish I could remember where I saw this file last time, but I remember it causing some issues in a Lexmark printer I had once.

Hello Guardian,

Thanks for your post ( I have seen some of your other posts in this and other forums and found them to be very helpful ).

I have disabled DCJLcats at start-up so when I run "msconfig" and look at services tab, I find the dclj_device line but it is showing the status as stopped.  As soon as I print though, the .dll error message comes back on the next startup and I just disable "Cats" again and I am fine until the next print session.

I think the "reloading" of DCLJcats has something to do with Updreg (in services and startup)  which updates the registry when changes are made.  I disabled it at startup to see if that does anything but it did not.  However, I am apprehensive of messing with the service entry of Updreg in msconfig.

Your thoughts and findings are always appreciated.

I just disabled the file in services and the printer still works.

I would say give it a try, so far no errors or issues on my printer.

Hope this helps.

Thanks but disabling it in services does not work either.  I have no trouble when it's connected to my XPS140 laptop---just the XPS600

Hi "friends" - sorry, my English is not so good.

I have the same problem with the Printer 964, but with the Dell Dimension 9150!

Thank you for your help in the forum. I'll try, to give the printer back. We all spent too much hours to solve the problem of Dell.

Greetings

Ro., Germany

I just bought a Dell 964 printer and XPS400.  It was setup together at Dell and sent to me ready to go.  First boot-up and I got this same error.  You would think that after I pay over $2K for a computer, that it could boot up with a rundll error on it.  And yet, Dell sent it to me anyway without an explaination. I had to search on the internet to find the problem (it was quicker than being on hold with Dell technical support for several hours).  Thanks to everyone who posted on this forum.

Send that printer back A.S.A.P thy will not let me return mine because it is over the return time. I was also getting memory failed errors? Until I uninstalled the drivers for this printer completely.

NOT HAPPY WITH DELL AT ALL!  I purchased this dell printer to work with my desktop what a waist of $200 dollars.+shipping+tax

Computer.....................$2700

Printer..........................$300

Time on phone to dell ...7 hours

I could have taken my wife on a cruise and not be sleeping in the dog house!!

I just bought my XPS 600 and 964 AIO printer the last part of Jan '06.  Talk about problems... both  computer & printer-everything from windows explorer locking up, DR Watson, Post mortem de-bugger, then you couldn't even CTL/ALT/DEL it would be so locked up.  We had memory problems and got the beautiful blue screen too and when I ran the extended diagnostics (which took 24 hours) it said nothing was wrong.  This was before I got on the internet-and before I hooked up to the printer.

After I got hooked up the printer it got worse-it would initially print but the memory problems got more frequent and the RUNDLL started.  Now, after they talked me through stripping everything off and & reinstalling everything-the two dual cd drives don't work, the printer still doesn't communicate, I still get locked up.  And top it all off, when it got wiped clean, I didn't have all the CD's for what was ordered with the computer to reinstall everything I paid for.

Yeah, they told me it was a known problem too, for the printer.  Seems their fix got rid of the RUNDLL, but now it doesnt work at all.  I've been on the phone with them so many times and for up to 9 hours at a time to try and get it fixed.  They are going to send me a new one to see if it works.  Maybe I'll have some hair grown back in by then...

I uninstaled the printer and have not had any problems so far touch wood. I do not want this printer connected to my computer at all. It did in my first XPS600 so bad that I had to get a new one.I am trying to get them to take back the one I have and so far no luck.

Yeah I think I'm stuck with the printer too.  Dell replied to my first email stating that their warranty covered the printer and not the software.  I had stated that the drivers were the problem and listed links to this thread and another.  They did not reply.  I emailed them back again asking when they were going to get new drivers out and they ignored my email again.  Lesson learned if there is a problem with DELL'S software (drivers) send it back saying "uh it doesn't work," you'll be further ahead.  Don't try and fix it for them.

Meanwhile the HP printer is still working with no rundll errors and the Dell 964 collecting dust waiting for updated drivers---UNPLUGGED

Oh tech support here's the # #AutoReply#  (KMM27182289I21063L0KM)
