Swapping paper tray selection on 3100cn

Does anyone know how to permenantly set up Tray 1 for 8 1/2 x 14 and the MPF for 8 1/2 x 11?

When I try to do this it prompts me to insert the paper and press the button.

We print almost everything in legal and want Tray 1 to hold the legal paper and MPF to hold the letter.

Thanks!

Does your tray really accept legal paper? Ours doesn't.

However, the easiest way to control your printer is by typing the IP address in internet explorer. To find your IP go into Printers and Faxes and right click on the printer and select properties. In the PORTS tab click on configure port. It will give you the IP address.

Then type that in explorer. Click on TRAY SETTINGS on the left hand side. Configure to your pleasure. Click "APPLY" then click "RESTART PRINTER TO APPLY NEW SETTINGS".

Then in Printers and Faxes (right click on printer and select printing preferences) you can configure different "FAVORITES" to align the computers settings with the setting you just changed on the printer. Click on paper tray and select TRAY1 and then change paper to 8.5 x 14. Click save. Save as "LEGAL" or something. Then click on paper tray and select MPF. Then click paper tab and change to 8.5 x 11. Save. Save as "Letter". You should be set.

When you print make sure to access "Preferences" in the printer screen and select the desired setting.

OK, you caught me on this one.  We have many printers and I have gotten them mixed up.

The problem with the 3100cn is that it has Plain Paper 1 and Plain Paper 2.

Tray 1 is 8.5x11 and works fine.

MPF has 8.5x14 and does not work fine.

The paper selection is set to auto and MPF is set to Plain Paper 2, whatever that is.

When trying to print to MPF it prompts to load paper and we have to push the button each time.

How do we tell the printer that it is loaded with legal size paper in the MPF so it does not prompt each time for adding paper.

Thanks and sorry for the confusion.

Anytime you add paper to an empty MPF the printer will verify what it reads. It will say something like "Tray settings have changed" and then you have to hit the -> button and just cycle through the recognition process. I've found the best way to avoid this is keep a healthy stock of legal paper in there at all times. There are no other good fixes I know of.

Is there an option to add an additional paper drawer to make it a two drawer printer?  The mpf does not work the way  we need.  We need the printer to automatically recognize legal and letter size paper without user intervetion.

Thanks
