Win8 Success w/ AIO 968W
Just wanted to confirm, for those interested that I was able to re-purpose my Father-in-Law's hand-me-down Dell Inspiron 531 | AMD 64Bit chip | 4 GB RAM to run the new Windows 8 OS. Works awesome! Love Windows 8 so far!!
Only problem has been getting my "not supported" Dell All-in-One 968W Printer to work on this machine. Finally I achieved success and wanted to confirm this can be done after all.
1. Installed latest Windows 7 64bit drivers and software for the AIO 968W
2. Located where drivers were installed on Win8 machine: C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3
3. Launched Control Panel, chose Programs
4. Selected "run programs made for previous versions of Windows" to launch the compatibility troubleshooter
5. clicked the "advanced" link and then "run as administrator" (note: thus, your login must have admin powers)
6. Chose "Next" to run so troubleshooter would display list of programs
7. From that list, I selected "Not Listed" and clicked NEXT
8. When asked to enter the programs location, I merely entered the path to the Dell drivers: C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\x64\3 and clicked BROWSE
9. From the list of .exe files, I chose dldocfgx.exe and the clicked OPEN
10. I then let the troubleshooter apply compatibility settings. First for WinXP service pack 3, then I changed it to Win7 SP1.
11. Finally, I tried printing a test page and it worked! Then I tried scanning that printed page to ensure my 968W can send scans to my Windows 8 desktop and it worked as well!!!
Of course, you can always wait for Dell to create new drivers in a few months :-) Hope this helps.

I have spent days trying to get my 968w to work with windows 8. The first and most important thing is to uninstall and then download the driver from dell. I then followed your steps and now my printer is working. I have searched all over for help and tried everything I could find. Yours was the only solution that got me up and running. Thanks for the info. I sure didn't want to wait months for Dell to update the drivers. You would think that Dell could at least have the info you listed so that users can get their printers going.
