I'm having the exact same problem! I've found the firmware driver but that did not help. I've also tried using different CD burning programs: Nero, Easy CD Creator, Clone CD.
I am running xp pro -- i was able to burn a few cds on a cheaper grade cd. Then it just stopped working. Media Player will convert the mp3 files to audio format but 3-4% into copying the first track it poops out. I tried downloading drivers, windows updates, etc. I then went and bought a higher quality spindle of CDR's. No luck.
I got the exact same problem with the NEC NR-7900A CDRW drive. At first the drive seemed to work, allthough burning files could only go as "fast" as 8x. Now even at 4x I get calibration errors.
I see these kind of messages in conjuction with the NEC NR-7900A all over the board, but solutions from Dell cannot be found. Can somebody please find out what is happening here. In the last few days I cannot even burn a single CD because of this problem....
DELL please find a solution to this problem. People are complaining about one of your products. Something that cannot be neglected. My Dell PC I am 100% pleased with. It runs like a well oiled sewing machine, but this NEC NR-7900A is a big mistake. Making mistakes is no shame, as long as you have learned from it and correct it a.s.a.p.!!!
I have a demension 8200 and a NEC NR-7900A. My burner is suddenly having a very hard time. I CANT EVEN SEE IT! When I go to "My Computer" my CD drive doesnt show up. I tried a "add hardware wizard" and it just said that "Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)". I also tired unplugging my CD Drive by going inside the computer and taking out the big orange thing. Then I restarted with it out, then tired with it in again, and it didnt work. What now?
i would like to know if you have found the answer to this problem. i have the same problem and it sure is irritating. i can't back up my quicken or copy any pictures from my camera to a cd. i would appreciate any help thank you
My burner worked great for quite a while then suddenly began burning only singles, but some of those are only a few seconds long. I have a Gateway and their techs gave up and said contact the manufacturer. Thanks. That's it in a nutshell.
I also have Dell Dimension 8200 with this drive. Strangely I can't get native Windows XP burning as an option in the Autoplay menu. Is there any response from Dell? Is there a driver update or anything?
I have been having problems with the 7900A program (whatever it is) and I was highly dissappointed with dell "technical support line" I recieved no assistance whatsoever. So much for their award winning technical support that they hype up on every commercial possible. I guess with my next purchase I'll be heading over to BestBuy I've been satisfied with their service so far.

Same problem. I've heard that it runs fine on XP Pro. I might try that, but really would rather not.
Actually, I'm on a Dim 4400, but the 7900a seems to have probs with mult systems.

The lousy NEC drive strikes again! I've been having intermittent problems for a little while, but now it's shut down for good.
Dell? Hello? Are you out there?
