Dell Back-up and Recovery

I am trying to Back up and create Recovery media every since I got this computer.  It is an Inspiron 5737 running WIN 10 (upgraded successfully from 8 many months ago.)

In the "log" of attempts to backup and recover, it notes, "Backup postponed."  I have several Passport Hard-drives, one which is nearly new, plus I have 64 GB  Flash Drives.  When plugged in all of these devices show their contents and are recognized by the computer.  However, the Back-up program never shows that that any device is connected; just tells me to plug in a hard-drive or a flash drive, no matter what I try.  

Any suggestions or help for my problem will be appreciated
