Dell Dock won't install on old Dell PC.

I downloaded and tried to install Dell Dock on my old Dell system because I love it on my new XPS laptop w/ Win 7.  I'm getting an error that says it can only be installed on a Dell system.  I am trying to install it on a Dell system!!!  I am running Win XP.  It is a 2002 system and I have installed a new hard drive and video card and also added RAM.  When I installed Win XP on the new hard drive, I used the install CD that came w/ the system when I originally purchased it.  Any suggestions?

slls1961,

QUOTE: Note, that I did more or less the same to my other (much newer) Dimension and the DellDock program works very well (under W7).

I don't have a clue as to what that means. Did you do more, or less? And what did you do?

But a bigger problem, in my view, is the 512 max RAM. If you are saying that 512MB is the max amount of RAM that can be installed, this is a pretty old system.  Are you  planning  to have DellDock run at start up?

??? When I said "I did more or less the same..." I mean that I have a newer Dimension (5100) and have upgraded that machine's RAM, audio & graphics cards, plus added a second HD and installed W7. The DellDock program works perfectly well on that machine.

Your point about 512MB RAM is what exactly? I know it's an old  machine - 11 years old to be precise. It shipped with 128MB RAM and Windows 98. According to the specification, even with such paltry memory, the program should still work.

Do you work for, or otherwise represent, Dell by the way?

Thanks

No, I don't work for or otherwise represent Dell.  And I don't understand what that would have to do with trying to get enough information to help you.  My point about the RAM was simply that XP(without any service packs) required a minimum of 64mb of RAM, with  128mb recommended.  In order to get XP to run as a stable platform, it will use the recommended RAM, and then some. DellDock requires 256mb RAM.  By the time you add the memory necessary to run an anti-virus program  plus all the other things that run at start-up, (check  msconfig for a list), the 512mb, plus a good bit of virtual memory, is used and that results in in a really slow machine, along with other potential problems. I have a 2002 Dimension desktop with 1G or RAM, the max ram allowed. I don't have DellDock installed and I have stopped any unnecessary services or programs from loading at start-up and that computer is still slower than christmas. That was my point, exactly. I wasn't trying to say that the lack of RAM was why DellDock wouldn't install. The other questions were simply an attempt to try to get enough information to help. It was not my intention to offend you. Perhaps someone else will be able to provide you with answers based on the information you have given so far.

DellDock requires 256mb RAM?!?!

Hopefully somebody else might be able to answer the original question which was simply that the installation program does not recognise my Dimension XPS B series as belonging to Dell. All your points relating to XP and requisite hardware noted. The machine is running absolutely fine. I was just wanting to run the dock program to declutter my desktop.

I am not offended at all!
